Ballynahinch aim to maintain top spot as AIL returns this weekend

The Energia All-Ireland League returns this weekend for Round 8, with Ulster side Ballynahinch RFC continuing to lead the charge at the top of the 1A division.

Ballynahinch RFC is currently riding high in the Energia All-Ireland League, topping the 1A division after a strong start to the season. With six wins from seven games, the club has established itself as a formidable force in the league.

"It feels great to be top of the league at any time but there are no trophies given out in November so we are well aware there is a long way to go this season," said James Kirk, Chairman of Ballynahinch RFC.

The team's improved attacking play has been a key factor in their success. "Our attacking play has been improving over the past couple of seasons and this year we seem to have made another step forward," Kirk explained.

While the club's current position is impressive, Kirk is keeping a level head. "Our goal was to get into the top 4 and make the playoffs. That hasn't changed," he said.

As the season progresses, Ballynahinch faces a series of tough challenges. "Every match in this division is a challenge and this year it seems that teams are more evenly matched than ever so it will be important to prepare the same for every round," Kirk noted.

The AIL plays a crucial role in the development of Irish rugby. "As far as we are concerned it is absolutely crucial to the development of the pro game. Academy players get exposed to high level rugby and others who perhaps slipped through the net have a shop window to impress," Kirk said.

For Ballynahinch, the league has had a significant impact. "The AIL has given us everything over the past 28 years. We define ourselves by our AIL status and are proud to have developed players over the years who have gone on to play at a higher level," Kirk concluded.

Hinch have been instrumental in providing experience and development for players who have went on to success, the likes of Zac Ward in the Olympics, Cormac Izuchukwu getting his first Ireland cap this year, and James Humphries receiving his first Ulster start this season.

Tomorrow Ballynahinch host Clontarf RFC at Ballymacarn Park, kick-off 14.30. For all other AIL fixtures this weekend, visit here.
