Ulster Juniors clinch Junior Interprovincial title with dramatic victory over Leinster Juniors

Ulster Juniors secured a well-deserved victory over Leinster Juniors 34-22, clinching the 2024 Junior Interprovincial Championship title, the first time Ulster have brought home the trophy in 7 years.

Ulster started strong, earning a penalty in the first minute which Eddie Keys converted for a quick 3-0 lead. David Brown from Ballymoney RFC put in a dominant performance early, leading the charge for Ulster. After some strong defending, Ulster won a crucial turnover at their own 22-metre line. Matty Graham impressed with powerful carries in an ensuing maul, but Leinster managed a penalty to clear their lines. Craig Miller levelled the score for Leinster with a successful penalty kick in the twelfth minute, making the score 3-3. Another penalty came to Ulster shortly after, edging out the score to 6-3 in the 15th minute, Keys successfully sending the ball through the posts once more.

The first moments of the game were a power-struggle between the two sides, with both showing relentless drive. Despite Ulster's early pressure, it was Leinster who were victorious in scoring the first try of the game in the 24th minute. A strong break in the line culminated in a score for the Leinster number 8, Tiernan Gonnelly. This was  converted by number 10, Craig Miller, to take the lead 6-10. Leinster were quick on the attack again, hungry for a second try, however, Ulster responded fiercely with James Wright from Portadown showcasing excellent defensive work. Ulster piled on the pressure, causing Leinster to concede penalties leading to a scrum. Moments later, Ulster's resilience paid off as Jack Gamble crashed over the whitewash for a try in the 31st minute, converted by Keys, to regain the lead 13-10.

The second half saw Ulster maintain their advantage. Ulster continued to threaten, with Curtis Pollock, Mikey Orr and Mark Jackson putting in powerful performances. Leinster remained persistent, earning a penalty but failing to convert in the 49th minute. Ulster's defence held firm throughout the half, frustrating Leinster's attempts to penetrate.

Ulster capitalised on their solid defence with a well-executed lineout. A beautiful catch by Peter Gillespie, set them up for a try from Matthew McDowell, converted by Keys once more, extending the lead to 20-10 in the 57th minute. Ulster's relentless pressure forced another penalty, and a series of impressive carries from Jack Gamble, Mikey Orr, and Gillespie culminated in a try under the posts. Keys converted for a commanding 27-10 lead in the 67th minute.

Leinster refused to give up and made a powerful comeback. Just two minutes later, hooker, Graham Reynolds crossed the line for a try, although the conversion was missed, taking the score to 27-15. Ulster conceded another try soon after, with fullback Eoghan Duffy crashing over the whitewash, converted successfully by Adam Nealon, brought the score to 27-22 with 6 minutes to go. However, Ulster had the final say. Dean Dillon crossed the line for a crucial try, converted by McDowell  to seal the bonus point victory 34-22.

This win marks a significant achievement for Ulster, showcasing their dominance throughout the entire Interprovincial series. Their three bonus-point victories culminating in this championship win is a testament to their exceptional teamwork and talent. Ulster Juniors can now celebrate their well-deserved title, bringing the Junior Interprovincial trophy back to the province for the first time in seven years.
