The Cape Town native arrived at Ulster in 2012 after a season with London Irish, and has been a constant in Ulster match-day squads ever since. His sterling work in the set piece - added to an impressive mobility and tackle count - have made him a crucial player and leader in the Ulster squad. Herring has also become a regular in Ireland squads for their Six Nations, Autumn Internationals and World Cup campaigns.
In November 2023, Herring became Ulster's most-capped player.
