Alan O’Connor | Toulouse Preview

Second row, Alan O’Connor spoke to the media this week ahead of our Heineken Champions Cup First Leg clash with Toulouse on Saturday. Here is what he had to say…

On what would be a good result for the First Leg in France…

We’re preparing for the win and we hope to go over and take those four or five points. If there’s a situation late on when we have to be smart and go for points in the last five minutes, who knows? We will be thinking about that but everyone is going into the game wanting to win, no matter what. If things change, we will have to change the way we think.

On the Tour experience with Ulster in South Africa…

It would have been good to get a win or two but it was good, especially off the back of COVID, we were disjointed as a team \[in terms of spending time together\]. It was good to spend a good block of a couple of weeks with all the guys on and off the field. It was a good experience all-round.

On the Toulouse pack…

Like most French teams, they’re a massive pack. A couple of their forwards can really play with the ball as well. They have the guys who can run over you and guys who can offload and pass well. They’ve got a good set-piece so we’ll be looking to go head-to-head with them and we’ll enjoy that challenge.

On what Ulster have learned from past European knock-out games…

I think staying in the game is the main thing for me, and not letting the game drift away from you. It’s important to try and dominate territory and go well in the set-piece. We need to make sure we play to our strengths and take away the opposition’s strengths. We need to be smart about how we go about our business.

On how Ulster will draw from winning in Clermont earlier in the season…

Most French teams impose similar threats. They have really good backs and forwards who can play. They have massive pack if they get their maul going and their scrum right. We’ll be looking to neutralise a lot of what they have and make sure we go over as a collective and use our collective as a strength to try to shut them down.
