Introduction to Coaching: The PLAY Model & Compliance Ecosystem
Coaching is an integral part of rugby. From mini rugby through to international rugby, a good coach helps to develop a safe, fun and engaging environment in which players can play to the best of their ability.
The Ulster Rugby PLAY Model is designed to support our coaches in creating environments that allow all players to explore, learn, and develop through game-based activity. We emphasize that "Play is the foundation of learning, creativity, self-expression, and problem solving." By integrating the IRFU’s integrated development framework with modern coaching philosophies, we focus heavily on the coach's role to guide, challenge, and support learning based entirely on the needs of the player.
Our core coaching philosophy is anchored on four pillars:
- Person: Coach the person, not the sport.
- Learning: Create the environment.
- Activity: Coach through the game.
- You: Hone your skills and coaching behaviors.
To ensure safety, quality, and a uniform high standard of development, the IRFU mandates a clear regulatory compliance ecosystem. All coaches operating within Ulster must maintain an active status on RugbyConnect to satisfy mandatory safety and technical benchmarks.
Coach Development & Compliance Framework
Strategic Session Design & Planning
A coaching plan is in place which is aligned to the IRFU’s national plan and driven by Ulster’s Playground Session Design matrix. Rather than rigid blocks, coaching plans incorporate a diverse mix of environments:
- Muck Around: Pure enjoyment and self-expression with no active coaching.
- Wee Games / Big Games: Fast-paced, dynamic, game-context activities with multiple skills and manipulated conditions.
- Skills Zones & Nerd Alerts: Short, sweet, isolated skills under varied pressure, emphasizing game understanding and problem-solving where mistakes are evident.
Every plan relies on a cyclical Plan-Do-Review structure ensuring that the player is the star, sessions are mostly games, good fun, establish strong connections, and reveal tactical genius.
2. Mandatory IRFU Compliance & Status Tracking
A comprehensive knowledge of the coaching workforce in Ulster is maintained through the RugbyConnect database. This live portal tracks mandatory compliance metrics, differentiating coaches across three crucial regulatory levels:
- Safeguarding Approved: The baseline prerequisite for anyone working with Age-Grade players. A coach is only approved once their official Vetting (Garda/AccessNI) and Safeguarding 1 (SG1) qualifications are fully certified and logged in RugbyConnect.
- Compliant: Achieved when a coach is fully Safeguarding Approved AND holds the specific IRFU Coaching Award appropriate for the level of the team they are coaching (e.g., Children's Award for mini rugby, Youth Award for 12+).
- Qualified: The gold standard of active coaching. To be considered fully "Qualified" in any given season, a coach must be Compliant AND hold an Active Coach Badge (Bronze level or higher).
Note for Clubs: Active compliance is directly linked to operational success. Clubs receive financial grants each season calculated based on the volume of fully Compliant and Qualified coaches registered within their system.
3. Education System: Learning Principles in Action
Coach Education courses from mini (Children's Award) through to Youth and the Senior awards are delivered throughout Ulster, with performance course delivered by IRFU nationally. Our delivery workforce is trained to instil four core Learning Principles during course delivery:
- Stretch & Challenge: Keeping players out of the "Boredom" and "Complacent" zones and safely within their optimal "Learning or Challenge Zone".
- Risk Taking: Promoting an environment where making mistakes is a healthy part of growth.
- Shared Language: Building collective understanding between coach and player.
- Problem Solving: Empowering players to navigate desirable difficulties for long-lasting, flexible learning.
4. Continuous Professional Development (CPD) & The Active Coach Badge
Appropriate CPD is offered through workshops, seminars, and interactive formats tailored to your role requirements and delivery expectations. Attending or completing these free provincial workshops can be found on Gainline and this automatically awards qualification points on RugbyConnect, allowing coaches to unlock their annual Bronze, Silver, and Gold Active Coach Badges (ACB). Note for Coaches: Only ACB’s need renewing per season, coaching awards remain with you for as longs as you coach.
5. Recognition
Ulster Rugby appreciates the value of volunteer coaches across the Province and aims to have a comprehensive programme in place provincially, regionally, and locally to provide regular internal and external opportunities to recognise and reward coaches and raise the profile of coaching.
