FAQs
FAQs
Q: I’ve never played any rugby before. Can I still play?
Of course you can! There is ‘no contact’ in IRFU Tag. It is easy to pick up as well as great fun. Leagues are graded according to ability. An updated list of IRFU Tag Rugby laws can be downloaded here.
Q: What do I need in order to play?
To start with, the only truly compulsory accessory required is a pair of approved Tag rugby shorts.
They must be shorts (made by any manufacturer) that bear ‘no’ pockets and sport a velcro patch on each hip for a Tag to be attached upon.
Q: How many on a Tag team?
The recommended squad size for a Tag team is 12-14 players. During a game, each team must have no more than seven players on the field of play at any one time. Of the seven players on field, three must be female.
Q: Am I automatically insured playing?
The IRFU recommends that each player undertake their own Personal Accident Insurance cover against any injury sustained from playing the game itself during the Tag rugby season.
Q: How do I sign up my team to participate?
Click on the register links above.
Q. How are my games scheduled throughout the season?
The teams that play tag are of varying abilities. To try and make the playing field as even as possible, we will run grading games over the first few weeks. To do this, teams are put into mini leagues; each team will play against each other. Teams will then be put into groups based on where they finished in the mini leagues.
Q. I have a team but we haven’t played before - does this matter?
No this doesn’t matter! The grading games will give all players game time and if you come against a very experienced team both the opposition and the referee will give coaching and advice throughout your match.
Q. My team feels it won’t be at the same level with having a season off and no practice
Don’t worry; this is why we will run grading games. While it is competitive, tag is a social game and we will do our very best to ensure the majority of your matches are played against teams of a similar level.
Q. I don’t have a team, can I still play?
Everyone needs to be on a team; please contact the venue manager and they can advise if there is a team short on players, or if there are a few players in the same situation, and put you in contact with each other to form a team for the season.
Q. Can you kick in tag?
Please refer to this guide for an extensive look at kicking in tag.
