Boasting two convincing victories from their opening fixtures, Ulster Juniors are brimming with confidence and currently sit three points ahead of their Leinster counterparts in the standings. However, a dominant display by Leinster against Connacht last weekend has injected a dose of urgency into the championship race.
Ulster's path to the final has been impressive. They kicked off their campaign with a comprehensive 47-12 bonus point win over Connacht, showcasing their attacking prowess with seven tries. Stand-out performers in the opening match included winger Killéne Thornton, who crossed for a brace of tries, and hooker Matthew Coulter who powered over for a score. Last weekend's encounter against Munster was a tighter affair, but Ulster's resolute defence and clinical counter-attacks secured a hard-fought 27-10 victory and a crucial bonus point. Stand out performances last weekend came from Michael Orr, Aaron Playfair and Thornton once again.
Head Coach Mike Orchin-McKeever is understandably proud of his team's efforts so far. "We've picked up two bonus points on the bounce," he enthused, "but for me, the most rewarding aspect has been the way the group has come together and the enjoyment they're getting out of the experience."
Orchin-McKeever highlights the players' commitment and the positive impact it's had on team spirit. "Winning the past two games has definitely built confidence," he continues, "it strengthens the bond and how the guys play together. This tournament has seen 17 players earn their first Ulster Juniors cap, while Matthew Coulter is set to reach a remarkable milestone this weekend with his 15th appearance for Ulster Juniors."
With a historic victory within reach, the weight of expectation is surely settling on the young Ulster squad. However, Orchin-McKeever remains focused on the bigger picture. "Personally, it's an honour to coach any Ulster side," he reflects, "but one that wins an Interprovincial Series would be outstanding. It's something I would look back on for years to come, and it would be a privilege to see the players create such incredible memories."
Ulster haven't clinched the Junior Interprovincial title since 2017, and this weekend presents a golden opportunity to rewrite history. With a passionate home crowd roaring them on in Randalstown, and a team riding a wave of success, all the ingredients are in place for a momentous occasion for Ulster Rugby.
Ulster Rugby would like to wish everyone in Ulster Juniors the best of luck this weekend and extend our thanks to Randalstown for hosting the final round of the Junior Interprovincial Series.
