Armagh Rfc Pays Tribute To Departing Coach

Last week it was announced that Armagh RFC’s cherished coach, Andy Hughes, had decided to call it a day with the successful Palace Grounds teams.

Andy (pictured above playing for Dungannon) arrived at Armagh for the 2008/09 season with a pedigree second to none, having been on Dungannon’s All Ireland League winning squad of 2001. Prior to this honour he had captained Ireland at Schools, U20s and U21s level. He was also contracted to Ulster after holding a development contract for three seasons.

When Andy joined Armagh his aims were to gain promotion to the All Ireland League and he demanded his team play a style of rugby which is enjoyable to play and enjoyable to watch. He was also very aware of the need to create an atmosphere where sponsors and supporters wanted to come to the Palace Grounds to support a winning club.

Andy took up the post as a member of the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service based in Omagh. Later, he married Jenna and moved to live in Carrickfergus. His job also moved to Carrickfergus. All in Armagh knew it was only a matter of time until Andy decided the the mileage spent travelling up the motorway to Armagh was taking it’s toll!

It has to be said that all the players, supporters and committee members wish Andy the very best in the years ahead. It also has to be said that the Armagh supporters will miss the never failing support his mum and dad gave their son at every game should it be in Cork, Limerick or Armagh.

Armagh Rugby Club will miss Andy in the seasons ahead!
