Armoy RFC reach out into the community for future stars

Armoy RFC along with the IRFU Ulster Branch have appointed a Club and Community Rugby Officer (CCRO) to encourage the younger members of North Antrim to take up rugby and potentially be the next Rory Best or Tommy Bowe!

Tommy Van Wyk has taken up the mantle for the club and is currently in schools undertaking classes for the children of St. Olcan’s, Armoy and St. Patrick’s in Loughguile, with a view to expanding to older players in Cross & Passion and Ballycastle High School early in 2018.

The initiative, which is part funded by Ulster Rugby, is to get more players to the Wasps mini rugby club at Armoy on a Saturday morning and also showcase rugby as a sport to children that may not have the opportunity to try it.

With the Armoy Wasps already featuring at half time at Kingspan Stadium during Ulster matches and playing in games and blitzes around the province, the plan is to build on these successes with new players picking up the core skills in school and bringing them to the Limepark pitches and beyond.

Interest has already been high and the feedback from the sessions that Tommy is taking has been excellent.

Gareth Christie from Armoy RFC added:

“Tommy is already making a difference and we’re hearing from parents outside the rugby circle that their kids are enjoying the sessions and want to know more about the club.

"We’re hoping that this converts into lots of new players and acts as a building block for the years to come at Armoy.”

The Wasps train every Saturday at 10am at Armoy RFC and boys and girls from P1 to year 8 are welcome to come and give rugby a try.
