Ballyclare Rugby Club erupted in celebration on Saturday after securing a dominant 48-8 victory over Bective Rangers in the All-Ireland Junior Cup final. Head Coach Mike Orchin-McKeever expressed his delight at the outcome, highlighting the win's significance for both the team and the wider community.
"The outcome was outstanding," McKeever enthused. "It was a convincing performance, and they got their hands on the trophy. The most pleasing thing, from a coaching perspective, was seeing the players execute the game plan while expressing themselves freely in a big final. I believe our past final experiences have helped them manage their nerves and stay calm on the day."
Talking about what it’s like to be standing on the sidelines as the coach, McKeever explained, "It is pleasing in the moment, however, the challenge and pressure is still there when you’re on task the whole time.” he said. “It takes the full-time whistle to get that time to breathe, and enjoy it, and reflect in a positive way.”
The victory marked Ballyclare's first time lifting the cup, making it an even more special occasion. "Being first-time winners, only our second final, it was massive," McKeever reflected. "It was a whole club experience – everyone shared in it, from former mini rugby players to older ones, past captains, and retired players. They all came onto the pitch to celebrate, and the sideline support was phenomenal, their chants and songs never stopped."
Looking ahead, McKeever's focus remains firmly on the future. "Next week, it's City of Derry. We'll keep building on the fun and connection within the team and maintain that 'next game' approach," he concluded.
Ballyclare's emphatic victory not only brought home a coveted trophy but also served as a testament to the team's spirit and the unwavering support of the entire club community. As they approach their next challenge, Saturday's triumph will undoubtedly fuel their drive for continued success.
