Ballynahinch close in on Ulster Bank League 1A spot

Ballynahinch could secure the Ulster Bank League Division 1B title this weekend with a win over Blackrock College, while Ards will avoid relegation from Division 2B if they can muster a win over fellow strugglers Sunday's Well.

All fixtures kick off at 2.30pm on Saturday 13th April (unless otherwise stated).

DIVISION 1B

BALLYNAHINCH (1st) v Blackrock College (5th), Shaw's Bridge Sports Complex, 3.00pm, Sat 13th April

'Hinch can make certain of the title and promotion; they’re nine points clear, and such is their impressive points difference, just one more point would do it. But they will, of course, be looking to add to their impressive string of victories. Blackrock have enjoyed a very good second half to the league to move up to fifth in the table after a dismal start. But it is hard to visualise them spoiling Ballynahinch's celebrations. Not only can the Ulster side win in style but they can also succeed in the close games as they demonstrated in style when No. 8 Michael Graham's injury time try game gave them victory over Dublin University last Saturday.

BELFAST HARLEQUINS (6th) v DUNGANNON (8th), Deramore Park

Dungannon are now 10 points clear of the bottom two Bruff and Ballymena following some recent improved performances. With the pressure off, there's every chance they can secure another victory against their Ulster rivals. They have some quality players, two of which Ulster's Chris Cochrane and Ali Birch have scored hat-tricks of tries in recent outings. Belfast Harlequins, for their part, have spent most their time around mid table. Their most recent game saw them go down to a 39-22 hammering to Buccaneers but they did field an experimental team.

UCD (2nd) v MALONE (7th), Belfield

It’s hard to visualise UCD wasting their chance of getting second place and a relegation/promotion match against the team finishing second last in Division 1A. Their form has been outstanding lately while Malone would appear to be a shadow of the side which started the season in such impressive fashion. Everything points to a UCD victory. They remain particularly dangerous behind the scrum, with two of their backs, Andrew Boyle and Sam Coghlan-Murray having featured in the Leinster A team's 30-26 British & Irish Cup semi-final victory over Bristol last weekend.

Buccaneers (4th) v BALLYMENA (10th), Dubarry Park

Ballymena could yet move away from bottom spot following their 29-14 home success over fellow strugglers Bruff. But this is a very tough task against a Buccaneers side that lies fourth in the table. It will take a very big performance if Ballymena are to come away with anything.

DIVISION 2A

BANBRIDGE (4th) v DLSP (16th), Rifle Park

Nine wins and nine try bonuses show just what a good outfit the Bann are. In another season they would have been in the mix for promotion. They had a big win over Seapoint last week and will look to end the season on a high. 'Salmo look set for relegation despite getting a draw out of Queen's last weekend.

Greystones (14th) v QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY (10th), Dr. Hickey Park

Difficult times for Greystones. They are in the relegation zone and even if they win on Saturday will face a playoff for their 2A status. Should Midleton pull of a coup against Old Wesley and 'Stones lose then it is curtains. A home win is more likely given what is at stake but the season isn't over for the Wicklow side yet.

Old Crescent (13th) v CITY OF DERRY (5th), Rosbrien

The Limerick side secured their Division status with a good win over Seapoint at the end of March. City of Derry made a late charge with a huge win over Midleton - which effectively sealed their fate and could still take a top four slot with a win this weekend.

DIVISION 2B

ARDS (14th) v Sunday's Well (13th), Hamilton Park

Both of these sides need to win to avoid the prospect of a playoff to avoid relegation. Only a point separates them. The Well have shown themselves adept at picking up losing bonus points but that will not be on the agenda on Saturday. The odds favour an away win with the Well coming off the back of a narrow loss to Boyne while Ards shipped 50 against Nenagh Ormond.

ARMAGH (7th) v Connemara (16th), Palace Grounds

Contrasting fortunes for these two clubs rooted in the local community. Armagh are mid table but with a healthy balance of eight wins and a plus 90 points difference. Connemara are relegated and face a big rebuilding project next season.

Naas (3rd) v INSTONIANS (11th), Forenaughts

It would take a bonus point win and a swing of a few hundred points for Naas to overtake NUIM Barnhall. That said they still have a shot at promotion, via a playoff, if they win this home game on Saturday. Inst. have little at stake in this game and a home win is on the cards.

RAINEY OB (1st) v Clonakilty (15th), Hatrick Park

Hatrick Park will be a scene of celebration this weekend as the home side receive the trophy for winning the division. They should also sign off with a win over visitors Clonakilty which could well condemn the visitors to a relegation playoff.
