Building on the success of the prior two years, the B.I.G. includes three days of summer camps where children aged 9-13 years will receive training from professional coaches skilled in rugby, football and gaelic football. Following the summer camps, participants will take part in the flagship Game of Three Halves where they will compete against groups from other parts of Belfast in these three sports.
"We are excited to organise this event once again. We received a tremendous amount of positive feedback last year, and look forward to providing the children of Belfast another fantastic experience again this year," said Gareth Harper, Managing Director of PPI-NI.
"The B.I.G. camps and flagship Game of Three Halves is the only event of its kind in Belfast. And we are proud to say that it will involve children from all parts of the city and both sides of the historical political divide."
The B.I.G. summer camps and Game of Three Halves are offered free of charge to children aged 9-13 years, and transportation to and from the venues will be provided.
The camps will take place as follows:
South Belfast: 22-24 July, Harlequins RFC
East Belfast: 22-24 July, Ashfield Girls HS
West Belfast: 29-31 July, St. John's GAC
North Belfast: 29-31 July, Seaview Stadium
Children from all parts of Belfast who participate in these camps will come together for the flagship Game of Three Halves on Friday 8th August at Seaview Stadium. Parents are welcome to attend.
In addition to competing in these sports, children will participate in a 'fourth half' of community relations activities. During these activates PPI-NI will use its proven curriculum that is designed to challenge commonly held notions about symbols, stereotypes and prejudices.
"Northern Ireland has a rich sporting heritage, which will be on full display during this event. During the ‘fourth half’ of community relations activities, PPI-NI will use these sports as a lens through which to address the sectarian conflict that affects the lives of so may children in Belfast," added Harper.
"While everyone will have a great time, they will also walk away better equipped to address some of the challenges they face on daily basis."
