A try from Harry Howard was sandwiched by scores from half backs Josh Fullerton and Rob Haldane to earn the win, with David Campbell replying for BRA.
Both teams threatened in the opening ten minutes, with BRA captain Mark Wylie and Campbell scrumhalf Fullerton taking play deep into their opponent’s half with strong runs. It was Fullerton who opened the scoring shortly after he supplied number 8 Calum Holland and then received a return pass to run in unopposed. Campbell captain Haldane had the simple task of converting from in front of the uprights to extend the lead to 7-0.
Campbell were by now in the ascendancy but BRA defended well and caused significant disruption at the breakdown to prevent further scores.
Haldane was unfortunate to see his long range penalty attempt rebound off the crossbar and with his prop Elliot Boyd immediately penalised for side entry at the resulting ruck, BRA received a double boost. They forced their way back into the game but lacked composure and a clinical edge as the half drew to a close.
Half time: BRA 0 - 7 Campbell College
BRA started brightly after the interval and looked much more dangerous with ball in hand. A kick bounced awkwardly for the Campbell defence and BRA winger Jordan Hylton collected and charged 40 metres up the pitch, only for opposite number Harry Howard to execute a brilliant tackle to hold him up as he crossed the whitewash.
From the resultant scrum, BRA built through some brilliant phases and were rewarded when right wing Jordan Hylton evaded a couple of defenders out wide to stretch over the try line. Conor M’Ilmurray missed the touchline conversion so the score now read 5-7.
Campbell responded but when BRA were penalised for hands in the ruck, Haldane’s kick fell just short of the posts. They did manage to get on the scoresheet again two minutes later; a charged down kick gave possession to Campbell and some good handling, involving a number of forwards, saw the ball transferred to Howard who touched down in the corner. Haldane’s conversion drifted wide; 5-12 to Campbell.
BRA then came back with a number of good attacks, including a brilliant counter attack from David Campbell who beat five defenders before winning a penalty. But the Campbell defence stood firm under pressure and Haldane put gloss on the result with an excellent line break and finish to score his side’s third try in the last play of the game. He dusted himself off to convert and seal a 7-19 win for Campbell.
