CEO Message: Jonny Petrie addresses local clubs and Ulster Rugby supporters in light of recent developments around COVID-19 restrictions

With government regulations and guidance around slowing the spread of COVID-19 continuing to evolve, Ulster Rugby CEO, Jonny Petrie, has this message for local rugby clubs across the province, and supporters of the professional game. “At Ulster Rugby, we are acutely aware of the pressures which many of you are continuing to live under as a result of the ongoing pandemic, both from a personal and sporting perspective. “I have been encouraged to see the domestic game across Ulster make a measured return to action over the past weeks within a club and school setting, and I would like to commend the ongoing hard work of the individuals who have made this possible. Without their time and efforts to prepare facilities and implement the latest government health advice – with assistance from Ulster Rugby and the IRFU – this return to rugby would not have been possible. “Similarly, it has been heartening to watch the professional game restart – bringing with it the highs and lows of live sport that we have all deeply missed. Although we cannot stand up together in a physical sense, I know it is an endless source of encouragement for Dan and the squad that our supporters continue to gulder for the team from the safety of their homes. “However, I am conscious that the reality is that with the current situation changing daily, we could be on the precipice of increased restrictions on our daily lives, and as a result we need to prepare for how this could affect the ability for sport to operate across Ulster. “I wanted to take this opportunity to reassure you, whether you are a member of a local rugby club, a supporter of the professional game, or both, that we are continuing to work closely with the NI Executive, and the Government of Ireland alongside the IRFU, to bring you the latest official health guidance, and offer advice and support on what this means for the sport that we all love. “At this stage, it is too early for me to update you on what impact any potential increased restrictions will have on both the professional and domestic game. Only at the start of this week, Ulster Rugby submitted a proposal to the Department for Communities detailing our full operational plans for a potential test event, which would allow for spectators to make a safe and measured return to the Kingspan Stadium, for the upcoming Guinness PRO14 new season. “As we await feedback on this proposal, and also for updates on how rugby at all levels is likely to be affected by the ever-evolving situation we find ourselves living in, I would like to assure you that we take very seriously our responsibility as both a professional club, and a governing body for the domestic game. “With this in mind, we appreciate the unpredictability of the current circumstances can, at times, lead to frustration, so I ask for your patience in bearing with us as we look to have a clearer picture of what possible new restrictions will mean for us all. Our priority will then be to work with our local clubs and schools, and communicate with our loyal legion of supporters, on our next steps together. “In the meantime, I would also like to take this opportunity to extend my personal thanks to all those across the province who continue to dedicate their time and effort to rugby in Ulster. By continuing to follow all the relevant government advice, as both individuals and a collective, we can take responsibility and play our part in what is likely to be some of the most difficult times we will face as a sport. “Stay safe, and I will be in touch with you all again soon.” #StandUpTogether Ulster Rugby CEO – Jonny Petrie
