Club Rugby Preview - 04 March 2017

Here is a run down of all the club rugby taking place across the Province this weekend...

We are reaching the business end of the season with five rounds left in the Ulster Bank All-Ireland League. With three games being played in March and two in April this crucial block of games in March will tell us which of our eleven Ulster UBL clubs will be challenging for promotion and the playoffs come the final two matches. Only Belfast Harlequins will be playing for pride as they look doomed to playing in the fourth tier of the UBL next season.

In the Kukri Ulster Rugby Championship we have three rounds of matches left in Division One. Six points separate leaders Omagh, Ballyclare and Instonians with Omagh and Ballyclare meeting at the Thomas Mellon playing fields this weekend. This will be followed by Ballyclare hosting Instonians at the Cloughan on Saturday week. Can Enniskillen close the gap on 4th place Portadown this week as they compete for a  place in the All Ireland Junior Cup next season with Portadown and Enniskillen due to meet at Chambers Park on Saturday week. Dromore, Clogher Valley and Cooke are the three teams looking to avoid finishing in 9th place and the playoffs with five points separating these teams. Ards have been relegated to Div 2 next season.

In Division 2 unbeaten Coleraine have opened up a commanding 13 point advantage on 2nd place CIYMS with four games remaining. Newly appointed Ulster Junior Head coach Richard Boyd and his players will be looking to close out their title bid in their next two games. CIYMS are involved in a two horse race with Belfast neighbours Grosvenor for second place and the playoffs. CIYMS have the easier run in with Grosvenor having to play Limavady and Coleraine. It is looking like Lisburn will avoid the playoffs. They have an eight point advantage over 9th place UUC with Donaghadee’s relegation all but confirmed to Div 3 next season.

In Division 3 PSNI remain top, one point ahead of Ballymoney who have two games in hand with four rounds remaining. It looks like a straight contest between these two teams for 1st and 2nd place.

In the Ulster Bank All Ireland League Div 1B, Ballymena and Ballynahinch were 4th and 6th respectively before the Xmas Break. Four matches into 2017 Ballynahinch are 5th and Ballymena are 6th. Looking at the remaining matches they have left to play they both need to win at least two of their five games to avoid slipping into the relegation zone. You would have said before the Xmas break that the relegation/playoff places would have been decided between Shannon, Dolphin, UCC and Galwegians. These sides have picked up league points and will put pressure on Ballymena and Ballynahinch over the remaining games with Ballynahinch having lost games against UCC and Galwegians in recent weeks.

In Division 2A we have three Ulster teams Banbridge, Malone and Queens Uni challenging along with Munster teams Highfield and Nenagh Ormond for the league title and a top four finish. Banbridge are in their 5th season in Division 2A after securing promotion in 2011/12. They have finished in the top four, three out of the last four seasons. After finishing 2nd last season they lost out in the playoffs for promotion to Div 1B. Can this be their season. Looking at the fixtures involving the top five teams the advantage would have to be with Banbridge. Both Malone and Queens Uni are involved in fixtures with four of the top five teams. There is also a real battle going on between Galway Corinthians, Sunday’s Well and Cashel to avoid finishing in 9th place with three points separating these three teams. Belfast Harlequins are now 15 points adrift of 9th place Corinthians.

In Div 2B Armagh have returned to the top of the league. Looking at their five remaining games they would have to be favourites to lift the Div 2B league title. At Xmas you would have said Thomond, City of Derry, Skerries and Bective Rangers would be the teams involved in the relegation battle. Four games into 2017 it looks like Thomond are destined to be relegated again this season. They are 13 points behind 9th place Bective. Three points separate Bective, City of Derry and Skerries in their battle to avoid finishing in 9th place. 7th place Skerries are only 6 points behind 6th place Barnhall and a further point behind 5th place Dungannon. It is a straight contest between Greystones and Armagh for the league title with 11 points separating 2nd place Greystones and 3rd place Wanderers. In the contest to make the top four and the playoffs it would appear it is between Wanderers, Old Crescent, Dungannon and MU Barnhall with 9 points separating these four teams.

In Div 2C the contest at Xmas, Rainey were top with Navan 2nd, Sligo 3rd and Tullamore 4th. Four matches into 2017 it is Navan 1st, Sligo 2nd, Rainey 3rd, Tullamore 4th with four points separating the top three with Tullamore a further 7 points behind Rainey. Bruff were in 7th place and six points ahead of 9th place Kanturk. Bruff have picked up 15 points from their last four games to move up into 5th place three points behind 4th place Tullamore. Bangor were in 6th place before Xmas. They are still in 6thplace and have only picked up three points from their four matches in 2017. Looking at the league table there is only six points between Bangor, Midleton, Seapoint and 9th place Kanturk.  Bangor lost at Seapoint and drew with Kanturk in their last two UBL matches. They face another crucial match at Midleton in Cork this weekend.

ULSTER BANK ALL IRELAND LEAGUE DIV 1B

Ballymena (6) v UL Bohemians (3)
Buccaneers (1) v Dolphin (10)
Galwegians (9) v Old Wesley (4)
Naas (2) v Ballynahinch (5)
Shannon (8) v UCC (7)

Ballymena v UL Bohemians

It has not been a good start to 2017 for Ballymena Head coach Andy Graham and his players. One win, one draw and two losses have seen the Eaton Park side drop down to 6th place four points behind 4th place Old Wesley who defeated Ballymena 49 – 19 at Donnybrook two weeks ago. The Braid side will also be aware they are only eight points ahead of 9thplace Galwegians who won at 20 – 7 at Ballynahinch a fortnight ago. Like Ballynahinch can Ballymena turn around their season and finish in the top four and make the playoffs. When these two sides met at the University of Limerick on the 29.10.16 UL Bohemians won 25 – 15.

Ulster releases this week include Matty Rea, Conal Boomer, Stephen Mulholland, Dave Shanahan, Brett Herron and Mark Best. Injury rules out Ross Kane, Michael Lagan, Adam McBurney and Callum Patterson.

David Whann and James Beattie are ruled out through injury with Glenn Baillie away Skiing.

Ballymena 1 – 20 Bryan Young, James Taggart, Chris Cundell, Matty Rea, Connor Smyth, Stephen Mulholland, Conal Boomer, Adrian Hamilton, Dave Shanahan, Brett Herron, Jonny Rossborough, Mary Irwin (captain), Mark Best, Matthew Norris, Rodger McBurney. Replacements Adrian Kirkpatrick, Andrew Cundell, Willy McKay, John Creighton and Richie McMaster.

Ballymena Head coach Andy Graham felt his team were very poor in their defeat at Old Wesley. The players made mistakes, defensively were poor and failed to deal with the high ball. One positive from the game in Dublin was the introduction of 18 year old Matthew Norris in the second half who went on to score two tries. It was refreshing to see the impact Matthew Norris had, showing no fear and demonstrating his elegant running on the Donnybrook playing surface.

For this weekend the coach believes the Ballymena team is stronger than the team that lost in Limerick to UL Bohs. He feels his team are a good side after winning at home against a very strong Galwegians side and drawing with league leaders Buccaneers. He is expecting a much improved performance this week with his players having to play at the top of their ability. The attitude has to be right from the start in sorting their game out. The presence of Matty Rea will add urgency to the teams play with the inclusion of Matthew Norris and the returning Conal Boomer freshening up the team.

Ballynahinch v Naas

It is a case of another difficult trip down South for Ballynahinch against second place Naas who were promoted last season from Div 2A. In their last away match Ballynahinch were defeated 39 – 18 at UCC on the 11thFebruary.  When these two sides met at Ballymacarn Park on the 29.10.16 Naas won 41 – 26. Like Ballymena, Head coach Derek Suffern and his Ballynahinch players are aware that they are only nine points ahead of 9thplace Galwegians.

Ballynahinch Director of Rugby Ronnie Duncan is looking two wins from their remaining five games to be safe. Ulster have released Craig Trenier, John Donnan, Conor Joyce, Aaron Cairns, and Aaron Hall. There is also a possibility Jonny Murphy and David Busby will be released. Both Stuart Morrow and Ross Carlisle are unavailable for selection this week.

ULSTER BANK ALL IRELAND LEAGUE DIV 2A

Sunday’s Well (8) v Highfield (1)
Belfast Harlequins (10) v Banbridge (3)
Blackrock College (6) v Cashel RFC (7)
Galway Corinthians (9) v Queens Uni (5)
Nenagh Ormond (2) v Malone (4)

Belfast Harlequins v Banbridge

Tough season for Quins Head coach Andrew Gillespie and his players. The coach retains much the same pack that played at Cashel with second row Danny Annett returning from a facial injury with Joe Rooyaakers and Matthew Rainey facing late fitness tests on Thursday night.  When these two sides met in the UBL at Rifle Park on the 29.10.16 Banbridge won 31 – 15.

Banbridge Head coach Daniel Soper and his players are looking forward to being involved in an exciting finish to the league this season. He feels that there is so little between most sides in the league that he thinks it will go to the last weekend with plenty of surprise results on the way. He used an example to describe Banbridge playing Belfast Harlequins this week. Leicester were written off before playing Liverpool on Monday night and ended up winning 3 – 1. Belfast Harlequins have a lot of top quality players with the players looking to dispel the nonsense that has been published in the press this week about their status. His team will be well prepared for the challenge they face at Deramore Park this week.

Queens Uni v Galway Corinthians

Two wins from four have Queens in 5th place on 38 points, seven behind leaders Highfield with five games remaining. Head coach Bob Young is aware that Galway Corinthians are an unpredictable side from week to week depending on player releases from Connacht. His players are expecting a very difficult game this Saturday as Corinthians are desperate for a win to move away from the relegation/playoff zone.

He felt his team played well against them earlier in the season by dealing with their main threats in attack and how his players converted their opportunities into points.

When these two teams met at the Dub on the 29.10.16 Queens won 42 – 12.

Malone v Nenagh Ormond

The Gibson Park side travel to County Tipperary to play a Nenagh team that has not lost at home against an Ulster club side since the season 2011/12. Both Banbridge and Queens have lost at New Ormond Park this season. Can this Malone squad achieve the impossible and end this losing run for Ulster club’s. Malone are on an unbeaten run of seven matches in the UBL having won six and drawn one. For Head coach Paddy Armstrong the games coming up in March could not be any tougher than having to play Nenagh, Banbridge and Queens Uni. After being relegated from Div 1B two seasons ago this Malone squad have surprised many pundits in the progress they have made since losing 46 – 3 at Galway Corinthians on the 5.11.16.

Paddy Armstrong puts the progress the team has made down to the hard work they have put in throughout the season that enabled them to put this winning run together. He has instilled in the players that you never look further forward than the next game. He is aware it will be a big challenge for his players this weekend, but it is one they are looking forward to.

The Malone squad is expected to be along similar lines with Jack Owens released by Ulster. The only doubt is scrum half Connor Spence who will undertake a late fitness test.

When these two teams met at Gibson Park on the 29.10.16 Malone won an enthralling game 35 – 31.

ULSTER BANK ALL IRELAND LEAGUE DIV 2B

Armagh (1) v Skerries (7)
Bective Rangers (9) v Old Crescent (4)
Greystones (2) v Dungannon (5)
Thomond (10) v NUM Barnhall (6)
Wanderers (3) v City of Derry (8)

Armagh v Skerries

With the 1st xv returning to the top of Div 2B after recent wins in Limerick there is a positivity in the club with the 2ndxv reaching the semi finals of the River Rock Towns Cup. This is being matched by the clubs 3rd xv who are favourites to win Div 4 of the Ulster Provincial Rugby league with the team also having reached the semi finals of the Forster Cup. It is certainly a season that will hopefully bring the rewards the players deserve for their efforts. The postponed SONI Ulster Premiership game involving Armagh and Ballymena has been rearranged for Eaton Park on the 1st April with Armagh having an outside chance to win the Div 1 title.

For the match against Skerries Head coach Alex McCloy will delay finalising his starting squad with players James Morton, Andrew Willis, Willie Martin, Jonny Pollock and Chris Colvin all facing late fitness tests.

When these two sides met at Skerries on the 29.10.16 Armagh won 32 – 16.

Dungannon v Greystones

For Head coach Andy Hughes this has been a season where his team has promised so much. Lack of consistency has impacted on the team challenging for promotion after wins over top three sides Greystones and Wanderers at Stevenson Park. He feels his team have lost just too many games they should have won. Throughout the season the coaches and the squad have been working hard to develop their ability to stay focused throughout a game. When the team achieves this they are a different side as supporters have witnessed sporadically this season.

The team’s intensity against Wanderers was as good as the coach has witnessed this season with a number of players putting in top performances.

The challenge for the Dungannon players is replicate that level week in and week out. If the team can do this, who knows where they could end up before the season ends.

For this week Jake Finlay, Sean O’Hagan, JJ Kane, Rodney Bennett and Ross McCaughey remain on the injured list along with the unavailable Steven Sinnamon. Mark Riddell comes back into the squad.

When these two sides met at Stevenson Park on the 29.10.16 Dungannon won 35 – 19.

ULSTER BANK ALL IRELAND LEAGUE DIV 2C

Boyne (10) v Seapoint (8)
Bruff (5) v Navan RFC (1)
Kanturk (9) v Tullamore (4)
Midleton (7) v Bangor (6)
Rainey OB (3) v Sligo (2)

Bangor v Midleton

Crucial game for the seasiders in Cork this week. Bangor ended a five match losing run by drawing 7 – 7 with 9th place Kanturk at Upritchard Park two weeks ago. When these two teams met at Upritchard Park on the 29.10.16 Bangor won 32 – 23.

Bangor squad 1 – 20 Philip Whyte (Captain), Andrew Shaw, James Leary, Craig Burton, James Henley, Ryan Latimer, Mike Apsley, David Bradford, Ali Lockhart, Jason Morgan, Dave Charles, Lewis Sampson, Phil Broderick. Mark Widdowson, Gareth Wright. Bench will include Andrew Jackson, Desi Fusco and Taylor Ferguson with remaining two places to be filled on Thursday night.

Bangor 1st xv Manager Ricky Armstrong is confident the team can finish the season strongly starting at Midleton on Sat. They have already recorded wins on the road at leaders Navan and Kanturk. There is a feeling the team selected this week is one of the strongest they have been able to field this season with the return of influential back row forward David Bradford and Ulster centre Lewis Sampson.

Rainey OB v Sligo

Big game for both teams at Hatrick Park this week. Rainey Head coach John Andrew’s remains without his first choice front row of Tommy O’Hagan, George Fritz and Stephen Rutledge with both O’Hagan and Rutledge returning to training. In their absence the coach has been delighted with the performances of Aidan McSwiggan, Kieran Donaghy and Fintan Quinn who have stepped in to replace them.

When both teams met at Hamilton Park on the 29.10.16 Sligo won closely contested game 19 – 18.

ULSTER RUGBY SECOND XV LEAGUE

KUKRI ULSTER RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION 1 ROUND 15/18

Instonians (3) v Dromore (9). Played Friday 3.3.17. kick off 7.30PM
Ards (10) v Enniskillen (5)
Carrickfergus (6) v Portadown (4). Postponed
Cooke (7) v Clogher Valley (8)
Omagh (1) v Ballyclare (2)

Instonians v Dromore

It was disappointment for Inst Director of Rugby William Leacock and his players at Omagh two weeks ago when they conceded a last minute try to lose 18 – 17. It was his sides first defeat in nine league games as they slipped down to 3rd place six points behind leaders Omagh. With three games remaining it will require Omagh to slip up in their home game with Ballyclare on Saturday and Instonians to pick up a maximum five points from their match with Dromore at Shawsbridge on Friday night to keep the league race for the Div 1 title going down to the wire.

Instonians make two changes for the Dromore match with Blair Robinson and Josh Lyness replacing the injured Mike Blackwood and Mark Mairs.

Dromore Head coach Jonny Cullen and his players have been working hard in training to put right the mistakes they made in their 19 -5 defeat away to Enniskillen two weeks ago. At key points in that game the team fell short in attention to detail that ultimately cost them the match. He believes his players have the ability to turn things around and avoid finishing in 9thplace. For the match at Instonians Sam Russell returns to take his place in the centre with young Gary Dillon coming on to the bench.

When these two sides met at Barben Hill on the 24.9.16 Instonians won a closely contested game 16 – 9.

Ards v Enniskillen

Both these sides met in the Towns Cup quarter final at Hamilton Park last week with the Fermanagh side winning 17 – 7. Ards Head coach John West is determined to see his team finish their season strongly with three league games remaining. Ards suffered the misfortune of losing their experienced out half Paul Cox with a fractured ankle in the warm up prior to the Ennsikillen game. The coach had been impressed by the attitude, commitment and leadership of Paul Cox as one of the senior players within the squad.

The Ards coach knew that it was always going to be a tight game against Enniskillen, but after the injury in the warm up, he was forced to start the match with two forwards in the backs. He felt the main difference between the two teams was the Enniskillen winger Robert Balacoune. A very good finisher who could go far with Enniskillen.  He felt there wasn’t a huge gulf between the two teams. Enniskillen took the first half with Balacoune deciding the game with an excellent try in Enniskillen’s only opportunity during the second half.  Ards had plenty of possession but lacked the finish and patience at important times.
Selection will be finalised on Thursday night.

Enniskillen Head coach William Gibson was delighted to get the win at Ards last Saturday in the Towns Cup with his team securing a home semi final against Armagh seconds. With his Enniskillen team still in contention to finish in 4th place in the league and qualify for the All Ireland Junior Cup the team have a number of goals to pursue before the season ends.

The coach was impressed by the Ards team with their pack difficult to handle and a few hard runners in their backs. He is expecting a similar test when his players return to Hamilton Park this week. The goal for his players is to continue their improvement week by week. Enniskillen make a number of changes with Marcus Crawford coming into the front row and Ricky Lee into the back row with Michael Law taking his place in the centre. Winger Robert Balacoune scored another two tries at Ards to bring his total to five in his last four games.

Cooke v Clogher Valley

Head coach Colin Atkinson was delighted with the performance of his Cooke team in their 30 – 21 win at Grosvenor in the McCrea Cup. He knew that his team needed to play well to get past Grosvenor. They are a good side full of confidence and really contributed to an entertaining game.

This is a crucial game for Cooke against Clogher Valley this week. The coach has yet to finalise his selection with several players carrying niggling injuries from last weekend. Both William Dodd and Toby Mannus should return to the squad after being unavailable through injury.

Clogher PRO Gordon Montgomery felt Clogher Valley’s four league defeats against the top sides should have at least earned them losing bonus points for their performances. He feels looking at the remaining fixtures one more win should be enough to move Clogher Valley clear of 9th place.

Confidence is high in the playing squad after the team defeated Bangor seconds 15 – 5 last week to progress to the semi finals of the River Rock Towns Cup. There is a real buzz about the club after last Saturday.

For the game at Cooke, Clogher Valley welcome back Toby McAlpine in the centre with Tom Mills retaining his place in the back row in the absence of the injured Matty Robinson.  Otherwise the team is along familiar lines.

When these two teams met at the Cran on the 17.9.16 Cooke won 19 – 7.

Omagh v Ballyclare

Head coach Phil Marshall retains the same playing squad that defeated Instonians 18 – 17 and Ards 62 – 0 in Omagh’s last two league games. The players have had a rest last weekend and are really looking forward to the game this week with Ballyclare. He views it as a potentially season defining match for his players. With Ballyclare it is always a real battle and their loss last Saturday at Armagh means they have only the league to focus on as well. It is a game that could go either way. The coach feels his team have been playing very well recently and is hoping for another big performance to help push his team over the line.

Ballyclare Head coach Mike McKeever was disappointed with his teams 25 – 15 defeat Armagh in the quarter finals of the Towns Cup last Saturday. It wasn’t a great performance with Armagh very strong in the 1st half. His team made a lot of mistakes that was unlike Ballyclare. He as coach must accept them as his team have rarely made so many errors like they did at Armagh. He simply put it down as a bad day for his team as they departed from their normal high standards.

Mathematically it is possible for Ballyclare to win the league but statistically it is highly unlikely. With Omagh in first place it leaves them in a strong position with a five point advantage but this brings pressure on them as the team in pole position to stay there. Going to Omagh is never an easy place but we did beat them away last year. We have beaten them at our place this year and will give it a real go on Saturday. But even after this game the league will still be live to play for. It is excellent that the league is going to the last game of the season. The team that wins it will be the team that deserves the league but also must have the strongest squad to then go on and compete in the round robin.

Team selection this week will have to take some consideration especially in the pack with plenty of options from a strong competitive squad. The backs will be close to what appeared in recent matches but plenty in reserve that could deserve a chance but it is difficult to select outside of the squad that has been winning so regularly the past three months.

When these two teams met at the Cloughan on the 3.9.16 Ballyclare won 23 – 15. Two teams that are in excellent form with Omagh undefeated in their last eight league games and Ballyclare undefeated in their last seven league games. Expect another big crowd to pack into the Thomas Mellon playing fields this week.

KUKRI ULSTER RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION 2 ROUND 15/18

CIYMS (2) v UUC (9)
Coleraine (10) v Lisburn (8)
Donaghadee (10) v Academy (5)
Limavady (6) v Grosvenor (3)
Randalstown (7) v Larne (4)

CIYMS v UUC

The Belmont side remain undefeated in their last three league games with Grosvenor a further two points behind in 3rd place as these two teams battle it out for a 2nd place finish and the playoff against the 9th place team in Div 1. In their last outing on the 18th February CIYMS recorded an important 23 – 14 win at Limavady. The students played league leaders Coleraine last Saturday and went down 29 – 3 in a very spirited and committed performance.

CI Head coach Gareth Fry is hoping to field his strongest team and will not be underestimating the students. They gave his team a tough game up at their ground earlier in the season. The goal for CIYMS is the playoff place with UUC scrapping for every point to avoid relegation. He is expecting a tough game but is very much looking forward to it.

UUC Director of Rugby Brett Campbell was delighted with how competitive his team were in their 29 – 3 defeat against Coleraine. He felt his team earned the respect of the knowledgeable large crowd. The positives were the improvement in their defensive performance following the 50 – 22 defeat at home to Randalstown the previous week. The coaches were also pleased that the student attack asked questions of Coleraine and had the team taken a couple of well created scoring opportunities in the middle third of the match the score would have been a lot more respectable. All said the result reflected the gap between the standards of the teams this season they had to play. Good luck to Coleraine Captain Mikey Poskitt and his team in the run to their league success. Also thanks to Coleraine President Gavin Craig for his hospitality before and after the match. On the opening day of the season Coleraine scored 93 points against the students. Not taking anything away from Coleraine it reflected the difficult situation the University clubs across Ireland find themselves in having to play league games in September before they can prepare properly to be competitive, perhaps something the powers to be can reflect on.  Again it was great to see so many familiar faces present at the game. Students who had played rugby at the University and progressed to become players, administrators, Coaches and Captains at Coleraine rugby club.

The CIYMS game will be another massive challenge for UUC this week with the team really looking forward to the match. Whether it ‘s in defence or attack the playing squad are looking to improve their rugby until the end of the season and a likely playoff. New Zealander Mitch Lucas returns to the back row with out half Brendan Parke facing a late fitness test along with hooker Michael Smith and centre James Perry. Centre Hayden Maxwell and second row Dan Morgan return to the playing squad this week.

When these two teams met on the 15.10.16 CIYMS won 30 – 7.

Coleraine v Lisburn

Head coach Richard Boyd was delighted to see his Coleraine team pick up another five league points against a much improved UUC side last weekend in the local derby and put some distance between his Coleraine side and second place CIYMS. The game was full of mistakes with his team never really getting things going which was disappointing. He felt the players were forcing things at the minute and need to get back to basics and stick to the game plan this weekend.

In terms of selection this week the forwards will be at full strength with both Chris Nash and Michael Ferguson returning to the pack after they were rested last week.

The backline will remain the same with both Bokkie Carstens and Niall Irwin unavailable due to long term injuries. Kyle McAuley and Adam Parke have proved able replacements in their absence.

Lisburn will be fighting hard to stay clear of the relegation play off spot and they have been in decent form since Xmas so this will not be an easy task. They have a good scrum, maul and fight hard at the breakdown so his players will need to be on their game and more clinical than in recent weeks if they want to keep their good run of form going.

Lisburn Head coach Andy Postlethwaite is expecting a tough challenge at Coleraine this weekend. We know the style of rugby they play and will be going up there with nothing to lose. The players have trained well this week with having last weekend off. Selection will be finalised at training on Thursday night.

When these two sides met at Blaris on the 15.10.16, Coleraine won 56 – 7.

Donaghadee v Academy

Head coach Paul Blewitt has no new injury worries ahead of the game with Academy on Sat. He has a full squad to choose from with training going well this week. The Dee still remain without a win this season in the league.

Academy are on a four match losing run with Head coach Gareth Lynn looking to reverse their recent form.

Academy squad 1 – 17. Jonny Allen, Troy Wilson, Adam Martin, Keith Dobbin, Graeme Dobbin, Richard Henderson, Steven Biggar, Stewart Martin, David Kenny, Simon Beattie, David McCullough, Chris Cooper,, Jordan Buchanan, Jamie Wilson, Gavin Braiden, Lee Moody, TBC.

When these two teams met at Roughfort on the 8.10.16 Academy won 62 – 0.

Limavady v Grosvenor

It has been a disappointing second half to the season for Limavady Head coach Mark Nicholl and his players with the team winning 1/6 last league games. For the game with Grosvenor the coach has a few injury worries with selection being finalised on Thursday night. Grosvenor are a very hard side to break down and have justified their position in the top three this season. He feels his team are at a stage where they have nothing to lose, so it should make for an interesting game.

Grosvenor Head coach Robert Ford is hoping to have several players returning on Saturday including Andrew Kelly, Paddy Hamill and Philip Stoops. He also has a number of players carrying knocks from the teams 30 – 21 defeat at home to Cooke in the McCrea Cup last week with selection being finalised on Thursday night.

Limavady are a good team and it will be a difficult task for his players up there, but hopefully his Grosvenor team can bounce back from last week and get a win. Numbers at training are good with the players continuing to train hard.

When these two sides met at Gibson park on the 15.10.16 Grosvenor won 15 – 0.

Randalstown v Larne

Head coach Gary Longwell is expecting another tight and tough game when Larne visit Nelisbrook this week.

Larne Head coach Laurence Kelly is also preparing for another very physical encounter at Randalstown . He is still missing a number of key players and is aware of the task his players face on Saturday. Randalstown will want revenge for their defeat at the Glynn. Nelisbrook is never an easy place to go to. Gary Longwell has his team well drilled and they had a good result at UUC when they won 50 – 22 two weeks ago. Larne only had 35 minutes of play in their 59 – 0 win over Donaghadee which was not ideal preparation for the match at Randalstown.
