Preview of this weekend's club rugby action across Ulster...
ULSTER BANK ALL IRELAND LEAGUE
For the Ulster teams in the All Ireland League, key promotion/playoff and relegation matches will be played in the coming weeks. In Div 1B Ballynahinch and Banbridge are separated by one point as they chase the automatic promotion place to Div 1A next season. Ballymena are in 9th place and need two wins from their three remaining games to be safe. In Div 2A Malone have a 12 point advantage over second place Highfield. City of Armagh are pursuing a playoff place with Queens Uni looking to end their seven match losing run in the UBL to secure their place in Div 2A. In Div 2B Rainey have a fight on their hands to hang on to second place as they battle it out with MU Barnhall for home advantage in the playoffs. Hopes of Dungannon making the playoffs ended with their 21 – 11 defeat at home to Navan on Monday night. Belfast Harlequins are 13 points adrift of 8th place Sunday’s Well with four games to play. Defeat at Rainey this weekend would see them involved in the playoffs. For City of Derry it is all about completing their remaining fixtures and attempt to rebuild for next season in Div 2C. Can Omagh and Bangor mount a late challenge for promotion with seven points separating the top five teams with three games remaining. Both can make the playoffs. Can one go better and win Div 2C.
KUKRI ULSTER RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP
In Div 1 Instonians are clear favourites to win the league this weekend after their bonus point win over CIYMS on Tuesday night. They have a two point advantage over second place Ballyclare and only need a win over Cooke at Shaws bridge on Saturday to win the league title. CIYMS look favourites to finish in 3rd place with Carrickfergus, Dromore, Cooke and Coleraine all potentially in with an opportunity to finish in 4thplace. Portadown will look to win at Carrickfergus on Saturday to avoid finishing in 9thplace. Enniskillen look destined to a playoff match with Randalstown to secure their place in Div 1 next season. The defeat at home to Ballyclare on Tuesday night would appear to have consigned Clogher Valley to Div 2 next season.
In Div 2 Grosvenor require one win from their remaining four games to secure the league title and promotion to Div 1 next season. Second place Randalstown have a ten point advantage over Ballymoney with three games to play. Lisburn and UUC are battling it out to avoid finishing in 9th place and the playoff with the PSNI favourites for the drop to Div 3.
In Div 3 both Lurgan and Donaghadee picked up bonus point wins at the weekend with three points separating the two teams with three games left to play.

Ballymena v UL Bohemians
It has been a difficult season for Ballymena Head coach Andy Graham and his playing squad as they look to secure their future in Div 1B this season. Three matches with UL Bohemians, Dolphin and Old Wesley will decide their destiny by the 14th April. Lack of consistency in selection along with injuries and player unavailability are the inevitable consequences of playing All Ireland rugby in 2018. Even before selecting a squad for this weekend the coach has had to deal with three key 1st xv players David Whann, Conor Smyth and Alan Smyth being unavailable. Irish under 19 squad training has followed on from the Six Nations with Angus Kernohan and Azur Allison not being released. Irish Sevens squad training deprives the coach of winger Robert Balacoune with Michael Stronge being released. Back row forward Matty Agnew has been rested by the Ireland under 20 management squad after his involvement with the Six Nations. Ulster Players released this week include Callum Patterson, Brett Herron, Marcus Rea and Adam McBurney. Injuries have ruled out Adrian Hamilton and Jonny Rossborough for the remainder of the season. Illness rules out Houston Bonnar this week with Joe Thompson not available. Both Stephen Mulholland and John Laughlin are working in England with their availability to be confirmed.
Ballymena team: 1. Nacho Clandero Crespo, 2. Adam McBurney, 3. Chris Cundell, 4. Mark Foster, 5. JJ McKee, 6. Marcus Rea, 7. Dominic Gallagher, 8. James Gallagher, 9. Michael Stronge, 10. Brett Herron, 11. James Beattie, 12. Glenn Baillie, 13. Callum Patterson, 14. Dean Reynolds, 15. Rodger McBurney, 16. Josh Bill, 17. James Taggart, 18. Nathan Rankin, 19. David O’Hara, 20. Matthew Norris (Returning from injury). Both Ben O’Ryan and Ryan Matheison may be added to the squad subject to training on Thursday night.
For the game with UL Bohemians the coach is expecting a very difficult game with their opponents seeking out league points to avoid finishing in 9th place and the playoffs. Ballymena were well beaten by Bohs in Limerick at the beginning of the season. The one plus point has been the teams recent home form as they look to extend their three match unbeaten run. In their last game at Banbridge the coach felt their attack game let them down. The players were not just accurate enough with the ball in hand and struggled to compete with the Banbridge team at the breakdowns and rucks. The Lineout remained strong with the team stealing seven of the Banbridge throw ins. He felt it was lapses in defence that allowed Banbridge in for their tries. The challenge this week in training has been to get the attack right and for the players to be more physical in the contact area. Banbridge deserved their win over Ballymena. They work hard collectively as a team and are very well drilled in doing the basics. With three games left the coach knows the team need at least two wins to be safe.
When Ballymena played UL Bohemians in Limerick on the 30.9.17 they lost 36 – 13. Despite Ballynahinch defeating UL Bohemians 24 – 17 in Limerick on Monday they have shown the threat they pose winning their last away game at Shannon 26 – 22 on the 16.2.18.
Ballynahinch v Dolphin
It had not been a good weekend for the Ulster teams in their rearranged games in the UBL until Ballynahinch made the long journey to Limerick on Sunday night to play UL Bohemians on Monday afternoon. Injuries and unavailability had deprived the coaches of several first xv players. With a new centre pairing of Will Stewart and Callum McLaughlin along with Zac Ward starting in the back row in place of Jack Regan it was going to be a test of the character in this Ballynahinch team to win this game and maintain their promotion ambitions. Despite the difficult conditions it was a case of backs to wall approach against the elements for the team to dig out a memorable 24 – 17 win. With the match tied at 17 – 17 it was young Zac Ward who made a trademark break to score the all important winning try with winger Richard Reaney contributing 14 points from four penalties and one conversion to keep Ballynahinch in the match.
Ballynahinch chairman Philip Gregg spoke of the commitment from the players and how they dug deep to win the match. Their ball retention in the conditions was something commented on by the UL Bohemians officials. The team were able to up the tempo when they needed to put players into space illustrated by the try scored by full back Conor Kelly. The Ballynahinch scrum was fully tested with UL Bohemians able to call upon their South African Munster Academy prop in the second half. As Philip Gregg put it he is a challenge for any opposition prop. Ballynahinch also had to deal with three players Conal Boomer, David Busby and Zac McCall all picking up serious injuries. This necessitated changes with Clayton Milligan replacing Zac McCall and Peter Browne taking the place of the injured Conal Boomer with Paddy Wright replacing David Busby. Again these players played their part in securing the win. The Ballynahinch chairman has been full of praise for the commitment shown by Peter Browne during the season to the team. His efforts to be in Limerick and be part of this winning team tell you a lot about his commitment not only to Ulster rugby but his loyalty to Ballynahinch rugby club.
Defeat for Dolphin will almost certainly consign them to relegation to Div 2A next season. We witnessed last season the efforts they made to retain their place in Div 1B through the playoffs and Brian Mclaughlin and his coaching team will ensure there is no complacency in their approach to this vital match.
Ulster releases this week include: Pete Browne, Aaron Cairns and Jack Regan. Peter Nelson and Jonny McPhillips have not been released with injury ruling out Aaron Hall, Rory Butler, David Busby, Zac McCall and Jonny ‘Mo’ Simpson. Stuart Morrow is expected to return this week after missing the game in Limerick.
When these two teams met in Cork on the 30.9.17 Ballynahinch won 33 – 16.
Ballynahinch team played UL Bohemians: 1. Campbell Classon, 2. Zac McCall, 3. Jerry Cronin, 4. James Simpson, 5. John Donnan, 6. Zac Ward, 7. Josh Donaldson, 8. Conal Boomer, 9. Aaron Cairns, 10. Ryan Wilson, 11. Richard Reaney, 12. Will Stewart, 13. Callum Mclaughlin, 14. David Busby, 15. Conor Kelly, 16. Clayton Milligan, 17. Jonny Blair, 18. Peter Browne, 19. Chris Gibson, 20. Paddy Wright.
Banbridge v Naas
Banbridge have three games remaining as they trail neighbours and leaders Ballynahinch by one point. Banbridge coach Daniel Soper was very disappointed with the team’s performance in their Ulster Premiership defeat away to City of Armagh last week by 34 – 18. It required a few words in the changing room and training this week to remind the players they had dropped below their own high standards they had set themselves this season. 27 missed tackles in the first half at Armagh was a statement in itself. The coach recognised that both teams needed the workout with City of Armagh deserving winners.
Interesting situation with selection for the coaches this week. Ulster releases include Caleb Montgomery, Greg Jones, Tom O’Toole, James Hume with Eric O’Sullivan to be confirmed on Thursday. Rob Lyttle has not been released. Michael Lowry remains on the injured list and continues to make progress as he follows his rehabilitation from a groin injury. Both Josh Cromie and Ian Porter remain on the injured list.
Banbridge forwards will be selected from Eric O’Sullivan, Peter Cromie. Tom O’Toole, Michael Cromie, Stuart Cromie, Chris Allen, Mike Bentley, Robin Sinton, Jonny Weir, Matthew Laird, Caleb Montgomery, Nick Hayes and Stephen Irvine.
Backs from Jason Gribben, Jonny Little, John Porter, James Hume, Andrew Morrison, Conor Field, Adam Doherty, Ben Carson and Neil Kilpatrick.
There will be disappointment for some players who wont make the final match day twenty. Banbridge are building strength in depth with the seconds stronger than they were two seasons ago. The goal for Daniel Soper is to have a second xv that can compete with Ballynahinch, City of Armagh and Malone seconds. Players such as Matthew Laird have made considerable progress this season and along with scrum half Neil Kilpatrick (former Wallace player) have added competition for starting places. The loss of Ian Porter, Josh Cromie and Michael Lowry to cover the 9 and 10 position has been offset by the form of the experienced Johnny Little who played inside centre before moving to out half. Johnny has been a pivotal part of the Banbridge backline for several seasons and understands how the team play. Having Johnny Little step into the key 10 jersey along with Jason Gribben at scrum half and having Neil Kilpatrick to back up has been a bonus for the coach.
Dan Soper knows the game against Naas will not be easy. They have always had tough/tight games with not much between the two teams. His players are in a situation that they have experienced over the last three seasons as they pushed for promotion to Div 1B. Now they find themselves challenging for promotion to Div 1A this season. For the coaches it has all been about making the point to the players not to look at the table. It is all about performing well this weekend at Naas and getting a result. The squad has set themselves a target for their next three games.
When these two teams met at Rifle Park on the 30.9.17 Banbridge won a high scoring game 42 – 35.
DIV 2A
Blackrock College (8) v Galwegians (7)
Galway Corinthians (10) v City of Armagh (5)
Greystones (9) v Nenagh Ormond (4)
Malone (1) v Cashel RFC (3)
Queens Uni (6) v Highfield (2)
City of Armagh v Galway Corinthians
Coach Chris Parker was delighted with his teams 34 – 18 win over Banbridge as they look to retain the Stevenson Shield. The team hadn’t played in four weeks and the match was needed before they travel to play in Galway this weekend. The coaches are awaiting on confirmation on a few players to play this week with selection to be confirmed on Thursday night. Prop Michael Hoey is unavailable with Jonny Morton replacing him on the bench. Both Evin Crummie and Peter Starrett will come into consideration for this week after performing well for the 2nd xv in their 19 – 12 defeat at home to Ballyclare in the Towns Cup semi final last Saturday.
When these two teams met on the 30.9.17 at the Palace Grounds Armagh won 42 – 18. Corinthians have lost their last three UBL games but showed in their 31 – 22 home defeat to 2nd place Highfield on the 25.2.18 they will be difficult opponents. Armagh will be looking a repeat of their 39 – 26 away win at Nenagh Ormond on the 17.2.18 to maintain their pursuit of a play off place.
Malone v Cashel RFC
Head coach Paddy Armstrong’s approach is to look no further than the game at home to Cashel on Saturday. The county Tipperary side coached by Denis Leamy have moved up into 3rd place after defeating Queens 21 – 17 last Saturday. The key for the Malone playing squad is not to get ahead of themselves with the coaches continually emphasising this to the players. Paddy Armstrong has a lot of respect for the work Denis Leamy has done at Cashel and will ensure his players show his team the respect they deserve this week. With three games remaining Paddy Armstrong and his players are not under estimating the challenge Cashel will present for his team at Gibson Park this weekend. Michael Cartmill is unavailable this week with Josh Pentland requiring a late fitness test.
Ulster releases include Jack Owens and Peter Cooper with the availability of Joe Dunleavy to be confirmed on Thursday.
The Malone Head coach was full praise for the work Davy Heron has done with the second xv in steering them to the McCrea Cup Final where they will play Cooke.
When these two teams met at Spafield on the 30.9.17 Malone came away with a narrow 18 – 16 win. Malone will be looking to extend their lead at the top of Div 2A but will be aware that Cashel remain undefeated in their last four UBL games.
Queens University v Highfield
Can this Queens team end their seven match losing run in the UBL when they welcome second place Highfield to the Dub this week. The students went down 21 – 17 to Cashel at the weekend despite scoring three tries. Rory Bell returned at weekend off the bench with Alexander Clarke the only player released this weekend by Ulster. Angus Curtis is being rested by Ireland under 20 management team with Jonny Stewart unavailable due to illness. Mark Keane is expected to return after being involved with Ireland under 20 squad. Two new players James Millar (Ballynahinch) and Josh Rawlinson (Down High School) were amongst the Queens bench replacements at Cashel.
When these two teams met at Woodleigh Park in Cork on the 30.9.17 Queens won 16 – 14.
Queens team played Cashel: 1. Anton Lupari, 2. Alexander Clarke, 3. Andrew Clingan, 4. Marc Campbell, 5. Ali Burke, 6. Nigel Simpson (Captain), 7. Jonny Lees, 8. David Whitten, 9. John Creighton, 10. Richie McMaster, 11. Gerard Treanor, 12. Conor McKee, 13. Conor Shiels, 14. Jonny Milliken, 15. Jack Milligan, 16. Nicky Woods, 17. David Swann, 18. James Millar, 19. Josh Rawlinson, 20. Rory Bell.
Points scorers: David Whitten 1 x try, Richie McMaster 2 x tries and 1 x con.

Rainey OB (2) v Belfast Harlequins (9)
Skerries (7) v City of Derry (10)
Sunday’s Well (8) v Wanderers (5)
Dungannon v Old Crescent
There was disappointment for Dungannon Head coach Andy Hughes and his players as they lost their rearranged game at Stevenson Park on Monday night 21 – 11 against Navan RFC. It was a must win game for Dungannon if they wanted to make the playoffs. It is all about playing for pride in the remaining three games as the team look to end their four match losing run that followed on from a five match winning run that has ended their interest in the playoffs. Injuries and unavailability have impacted on the team throughout the season. The home defeat to Barnhall by 10 – 5 started this losing run with the team picking up five injuries during this match. Winger Mervyn Brown was knocked out against Barnhall. He came back for the Ulster Premiership game away to Rainey and suffered reoccurring headaches and had to be replaced at halftime. He will not play again this season. Back Jake Finlay was also knocked out last season and has suffered from headaches in his attempt to play again. Back row forward James McMahon had only played for four months following a shoulder injury when he picked up a serious knee injury against Barnhall. He has had to undergo surgery that will rule him out for 12 months. Further injuries have ruled out hookers Daniel Maxwell and Jamie McNeill. Player coach Seamus Mallon is another player who has been ruled out with a hamstring injury. Prop Sean O’Hagan is being managed in his return to playing rugby. Scrum half Ben Matchett is away to Australia and will be undertaking a teaching course in England next season. Both Andrew McPhillips and Ross McCaughey are unavailable to travel to Limerick this weekend with a doubt over the availability of full back Andrew McGregor. The Dungannon pack is expected to be the same that played against Navan with several changes to be confirmed in the backs on Thursday night.
On a positive note the coach has been delighted with the performance of former Dungannon Royal winger Matthew Montgomery this season. He added to his try scoring exploits with another try against Navan on Monday. Another former Dungannon Royal player taking advantage of injuries is prop James Gamble who came in after injuries picked up by Sean O’Hagan and Rodney Bennett. In his first year out of school the young prop has come up against several experienced props in the UBL and performed very well.
When Dungannon played Old Crescent at Stevenson Park on the 30.9.17 Old Crescent won 36 – 5. The Limerick side remain the only undefeated team in the UBL this season.
Dungannon team played Navan: 1. Glen Sinnamon, 2. Malcolm Allister, 3. James Gamble, 4. Peter Doran, 5. Stephen Todd, 6. David Leyburn, 7. Mark Riddell, 8. Jonah Mau’u, 9. John Russell, 10. Chris Swash, 11. Conor McGeough, 12. Paul Armstrong, 13. Andrew McPhillips, 14. Matthew Montgomery, 15. Andrew McGregor, 16. Adam Lockhart, 17. Jamie McNeill, 18. Ross McCaughey, 19. Lewis McCrabbe, 20. Jack Ravey.
Points scorers: Matthew Montgomery 1 x try, Chris Swash 2 x pens.
Rainey OB v Belfast Harlequins
It was disappointment for Rainey Head coach John Andrews as they suffered their third defeat in the UBL 25 – 3 away to 3rd place MU Barnhall on Saturday. Rainey still have a three point advantage over Barnhall with three games left to play. It is all about home advantage in the playoffs with 2nd playing 3rd. Saturday was all about assembling a squad of 20 players with three players Andrew Donaghy, Michael O’Neill and Jack McIntosh being asked to make an earlier than expected return to playing after injury. Fortunately for the coach the players all came through Saturday.
Despite the frustration of this defeat it is all in the hands of the players to hold on to second place. The playing squad is very positive with good numbers at training this week. As coach John Andrews put it to me he would have taken second place at the beginning of the season if it had been offered to him. This Saturday is all about winning the match against Belfast Harlequins.
The coach will welcome back Tommy O’Hagan, Josh McIIroy, Oisin Quinn, Jodie McMurray, Nicholas Stirling, Michael Nevin and Stephen Rutledge to his squad this week. The added bonus was Jason Bloomfield returning at scrum half last Saturday. Another positive piece of news is that back row forward Paul Pritchard is expected to be available for the playoffs.
Both Tommy O’Hagan and John McCusker have been released by Ulster.
John Andrews is confident where his team is at this stage of the season with the club in a positive place. The recent Ulster Premiership match with Dungannon allowed the coach to introduce second xv players Andrew Brown, Mark Mulholland and Timothy Andrews into the first xv squad as the coach looks to build strength in depth.
Rainey Ob team played MU Barnhall: 1. Kieran Donaghy, 2. Aiden McSwiggan, 3. Finatn Quinn, 4. John McCusker, 5. Ronan McCusker, 6. Andy Harbinson, 7. Peter Stewart, 8. Timmy Barker, 9. Jason Bloomfield, 10. Andrew Magrath, 11. Scott Mclean, 12. Andrew Donaghy, 13. Damien McMurray, 14. Robert Lamberton, 15. Michael O’Neill, 16. Callum Smyth, 17. Jack McIntosh, 18. Peter Boyle, 19. Michael McCusker, 20. Mark Mulholland.
Points s corers; Andrew Magrath 1 x pen.
Belfast Harlequins have not played any matches in five weeks since their 51 – 34 defeat at MU Barnhall when they scored six tries.Selection for Saturday will be finalised on Thursday night.
When these two teams met at Deramore Park on 30.9.17 Rainey won 23 – 7.
City of Derry v Skerries
The North West side have not played any matches in five weeks since their 104 – 0 defeat at Old Crescent on the 17.2.18. For backs coach Richard McCarter it has been a frustrating period with small numbers at training. With injuries and unavailability City of Derry will travel with the attitude they have nothing to lose and will give it their best.
When these two teams met at Judges Road on the 30.9.17 Skerries won 38 – 25.

Bangor v Midleton
Bangor Chairman Jonny Watson feels there is an air of optimism that Bangor can win their three remaining games and make the playoffs. Second row Dave Caughey is unavailable this week with Matt Nesbitt taking his place. Scrum half Lewis Brett is away to New Zealand and will be replaced by Mark Widdowson with Ali Lockhart ruled out for the season. Bangor are expecting a big crowd at Upritchard Park on Saturday for this match.
Bangor squad for Saturday with selection to be finalised on Thursday night: Andrew Shaw, Evan Wellard McMillan, Max Montgomery, Andrew Jackson, James Leary, Lewis Stevenson, Jack Cooke, Jamie Clegg, Mike Apsley, Matt Nesbitt, James Stewart, Gareth Wright, Mark Widdowson, Nathan Graham, Ross McCloskey, Desi Fusco (Captain), Mike Weir, Chris Jordan, Phil Broderick, Rob Gamble, Davy Charles.
Bangor won 15 – 8 at Towns Park in Cork when these two teams met on the 30.9.17. The North Down team are undefeated in their last three home UBL matches.
Omagh v Bective Rangers
Head coach Philip Marshall is just waiting on a couple of niggling injuries before finalising his team to play Bective at Donny brook on Saturday. Injury continues to rule out Neil Brown, John Blair and Mervyn Edgar with Ally Beckett unavailable this week. The coach is hoping to select the same 20 players who defeated Sligo 22 – 14 at the Thomas Mellon Playing Fields on the 10.2.18.
The three remaining games are all Cup Finals. It is a case in this league that teams are either fighting for play off places or they are trying to avoid relegation. The coach is expecting his players to face a severe test at Donnybrook on their 4G pitch that his players are not used to. After the heroics of defeating Sligo it is ensuring that there is no complacency amongst the players for the match with Bective who need the points.
When these two teams met in Omagh on the 30.9.17 the home side won comfortably by 52 – 17. Expect a much tighter game on Saturday.

CIYMS (3) v Coleraine (7)

Ballyclare v Enniskillen
Congratulations to Ballyclare on reaching the River Rock Towns Cup Final where they will play Portadown on Easter Monday. The East Antrim side find themselves two points behind league leaders Instonians with one game left to play. You would have to say Instonians are favourites as they only need a win against Cooke. Head coach Mike McKeever will ensure the home supporters are given a performance to wrap up their season at the Cloughan on Sat. Bonus point wins away to Portadown and Clogher Valley have failed to close the gap on Instonians.
From Mike McKeever: Ballyclare have had a superb season in the league this year and this Saturdays game is about getting out and performing on our own pitch in front of what we hope is a strong crowd once again. Whatever happens in the derby match at Shaws bridge is out of our control, we can do nothing about that but just focus on ourselves.
Delighted to have a Towns Cup Final on Easter Monday to look forward to, a real occasion for the club. However cant really understood why teams would not enter the likes of the McCrea Cup and deny their players the opportunity to play at the Kingspan Stadium. But he can see the potential backlog of fixtures that his team have experienced but glad they have gone about their season in a manner that sets up an exciting last day in the league. On Tuesday Ballyclare faced Clogher Valley which was the teams fourth game in 11 days – three of which were away games at Portadown, Armagh and Clogher Valley. With Clogher Valley not playing like a team that was bottom of the league it was credit to the Ballyclare players they went through 20 + phases in the last play of the game to get the all important 4th try and the bonus point. It showed the tremendous character within this group of players.
For the coach it has been challenging high lighting anyone player over the past three games but Ricky Lutton, Robert Boyd, David Clarke, Robert Smith and Joel McBride have been consistently nothing short of being excellent. The balance in the Senior Squad is spot on and the future is looking strong at the club with the two local schools Ballyclare High and Ballyclare Secondary winning the Subsidiary Shield and the High Schools Cup.
Enniskillen are a team urgently in need of league points to avoid the playoffs with games remaining at Ballyclare and home to Coleraine. You sense with both Portadown and Coleraine having a seven point advantage this will be too big a hurdle to overcome. Wins for Portadown and Coleraine on Saturday will end any hopes of Enniskillen avoiding the play off with Randalstown at Mullaghmeen to keep their place in Div 1 next season.
When these two teams met in the league at Mullaghmeen on the 18.11.17 Ballyclare werec omfortable 27 – 10 winners.
CIYMS v Coleraine
Interesting contest at Belmont on Saturday with the two promoted teams meeting each other. One more win will guarantee CIYMS 3rd place with Coleraine in a position to secure a possible 4th place if they win their three remaining games. Amazing how one minute Coleraine were staring at a playoff and now they could end up playing in the All Ireland Junior Cup next season. CIYMS will be keen to finish their season with a win.
CIYMS Head coach Gareth Fry will retain the pack that performed so well against Instonians on Tuesday night with Cameron Stewart and Ruari Meharg returning to the backline. He is expecting a tight game with Coleraine on Sat. The players are looking forward to their final game in what will be a big day for the club.
When these two teams met at Rugby Avenue on the 30.12.17 CIYMS won a close game 15 – 11.
Carrickfergus v Portadown
What drama we had in the meeting between the two teams at Chambers Park last Saturday in the Towns Cup. Carrick thought they had done enough to make the Final after leading 22 – 18 going into injury time only for a late Conor Megarity try ensuring the home side won a tight encounter 23 – 22. Carrick have ambitions to finish in the top four and qualify for the All Ireland Junior Cup next season with games remaining against Portadown and Clogher Valley. Portadown know that a win at Carrick on Sat will secure their future in Div 1 next season. Defeat for Enniskillen at Ballyclare will ensure their future in Div 1.
Portadown Head coach Richard Hedley summed up the meeting between the two teams last Saturday. It was a really tough game. He felt his Portadown team played very well and were fortunate to score a try at the death to win the game. Carrick were very strong and physical up front with his team having to play well to contain them. The game this Saturday will be more difficult with Portadown having to travel to Carrick. Home advantage makes a big difference in Cup games with Portadown being fortunate with the draw through the Towns Cup.
From the team that played last Saturday both Danny Alexander and Mark Henderson are unavailable this week. The coach welcomed back injured players Matt Davison, Willie Graham and Matthew Wilson to training this week with the players hoping to put themselves into consideration for the remaining fixtures. Bolt Nick Holt and Robbie Reid who missed the match last Saturday return to the squad this week. The rest of the team will be finalised on Thursday night.
When these two teams met in the league at Chambers Park on the 18.11.17 Carrick were convincing 43 – 6 winners.
Dromore v Clogher Valley
It has been a season that promised so much for Dromore 1st xv. Four successive defeats have seen the team exit the Towns Cup and slip out of the top four in Div 1. With two league games remaining the team can overtake 4th place Carrick and qualify for the All Ireland Junior Cup with wins over Clogher Valley and Cooke. Director of Rugby Jeremy Ogle has been pleased with the progress the teams have made this season. The seconds are in the final of the Crawford Plate and are in contention for league honours in Provincial League 2. The thirds travel to play Enniskillen in the semi finals of the McCambley Cup this weekend. As Jeremy put it overall the club has made significant progress on previous seasons.
Selection for the 1st xv will be finalised on Thursday night with Aaron Atkinson expected to make his senior debut for the 1st xv at full back in place of Adam McDonald.
For Clogher Valley it is all about playing for pride after losing their game at home to Ballyclare on Tuesday night. Mathematically they could overtake 9th place Enniskillen if they won their three remaining games and Enniskillen lost their final two games. Defeat at Dromore will see the team play their rugby in Div 2 next season.
Clogher Valley have a very interesting record against Dromore this season having defeated them on three occasions in the league, Junior Cup and Towns Cup. Can they make it four.
Clogher Valley won 19 – 18 at Barban Hill on the 9.9.17 in the Junior Cup. They won 21 – 8 at the Cran on the 30.12.17 in the league and again defeated Dromore 25 – 10 in the Towns Cup at the Cran on the 3.2.18.
Instonians v Cooke
Director of Rugby William Leacock was pleased with the manner in which his team secured their bonus point win over CIYMS on Tuesday night. It was all about getting the job done and the importance of the bonus point. He felt the team played some decent rugby but was disappointed with aspects of their defence that will be worked on before the game with Cooke at the weekend. The two half backs Matthew Keane and Fraser Wright controlled the game well with their intelligent kicking game. He rates this pairing as the best half back combination in the league.
Instonians are expecting another tough encounter with Cooke on Saturday at Shaws bridge in front of a big crowd. His players know they need the win to secure the league title but are under no illusions about the challenge Cooke will bring. As he put it, a Shaws bridge derby to end their league season.
The squad picked up a few knocks on Tuesday night with selection being finalised on Thursday night. Again the coaches are hoping to go with the same squad that played on Tuesday night.
Cooke Head coach Colin Atkinson described their 34 – 12 defeat at Coleraine on Tuesday night as a bad night at the office. Their first half performance was nowhere near the levels the team have set themselves this season, making it all too easy for Coleraine to get on the scoreboard. The team did show glimpses of their potential in the second half and scored two great tries but four injuries to Andrew Quigley, Jason Lyons, Russell Hunter and Andrew Hanna left the team struggling in the game.
Regarding this weekend injuries and unavailability are unfortunately leaving the coach really struggling to field a competitive team to play Instonians. Several players will undergo fitness tests on Thursday night before selection is finalised. Backs coach Philip Cartmill gets married this weekend and everyone at Cooke RFC wishes him and Susie well for a wonderful day and a long and happy future together.
When these two teams met at Shaws bridge on the 30.12.17 Instonians were convincing 33 – 15 winners out scoring Cooke 5 tries to 2.
DIV 2: ROUND 16
Academy (5) v PSNI (10)
Larne (4) v Ballymoney (3)
Lisburn (8) v Ards (6)
Randalstown (2) v Limavady (7)
UUC (9) v Grosvenor (1)
Academy v PSNI
For Academy Head coach Gareth Lynn he is looking a strong finish to their season with four matches remaining. Injury and unavailability will determine selection for this week . Selection to be finalised on Thursday night.
When these two teams met on the 16.9.17 Academy won a close game at Newforge 18 – 17.
Larne v Ballymoney
Head coach Graham Cloke has always believed his Larne team can finish in the top three. Again with a small squad you require the commitment from players to play at a higher level. Have the Larne players that appetite and aspiration. The focus throughout the season has been to take it one game at a time. On our day the coach feels his team can beat any team in the league. It is all about going out with the same attitude that won them their last game at Ards 15 – 7. The team is expected to be on similar lines to the Ards game with the only change being Stu Andrews coming in to replace the unavailable Anton White on the wing. Prop Sam McWhirter comes on to the bench.
The goal for Jonathan Hanna and the Ballymoney coaches is to see the team playing some good rugby as they look to put playing structures in place for next season. The team achieved its objectives this season to retain its place in Div 2. The remaining matches provide the opportunity for the coaches to ‘blood’ some new personnel from the second xv and the up coming youth players in the club.
For the match this weekend the coaches welcome back forwards James Blakely, Peter Irvine and stand in Captain David Mckeeman. James Cleland is unavailable this weekend with the injured Michael Armstrong returning to training this week. Team selection for the match at Larne will be finalised on Thursday night.
When these two teams met on the 16.9.17 at Kilraughts Road Ballymoney won a high scoring game 33 – 27.
Lisburn v Ards
Lisburn need the points on Sat to avoid the play off place with UUC. Ards have lost their last three Cup and league games that has seen them slip down to 6th place in the league. Ards coach John West is expecting a hard run in for his players in their remaining league games starting with a difficult game at Lisburn on Saturday. They are battling away to avoid the bottom two places and have had some decent performances in recent weeks.
Last Saturday was the first break the players have had since Christmas. Preparations have been good this week and Lisburn will get our total respect. A few players have put their hands up in training with selection to be finalised on Thursday night.
When these two teams met at Hamilton Park on the 16.9.17 Ards won 18 – 3.
Randalstown v Limavady
Head coach Gary Longwell identifies Limavady as one of the top teams in the league since Christmas with his Randalstown team expecting another tight match with them this weekend.
Limavady Head coach Mark Nicholl and his players will travel to Randalstown with nothing to fear. He believes if his team play to their potential they can get a result on Saturday at Nelisbrook Park. He also recognises that it is a difficult place to win against a well organised Gary Longwell side. His players have ambitions to finish in the top six so it will be important to get something from the game.
Team selection will be finalised on Thursday night with the coach hoping to field a team on the same lines to the team that defeated Academy 20 -15 on the 10th March.
When these two teams met at the John Hunter memorial Grounds on the 2.9.17 Randalstown were convincing 42 – 10 winners.
UUC v Grosvenor
The students have kept faith with the same squad that won 34 – 10 away to the PSNI on the 10.3.18. Injury keeps out scrum half Brendan Parke and winger Chris Allen. Regular 1st xv prop Peter McCully returns from injury to play for the seconds this week. The coaches have decided it is a week too early to bring him back into the 1st xv squad.
Director of Rugby Brett Campbell has named their team for Saturday: 1. Callum Boardman. 2. Michael Smith (Captain), 3. Gary Burke, 4. Jake Stevenson, 5. Dan Morgan, 6. Cori Hamill, 7. Bernard Mullan, 8. Ollie Millar, 9. John Allan, 10. Cameron McAteer, 11. Steven Logan, 12. Denis Postinak. 13. David Gilkinson, 14. Stuart Ballantine, 15. Adam Johnston, 16. Sam Hetherington, 17. Jack Bolger.
Grosvenor Head coach Robert Ford will be without Sam Purdon, Mitchell McComb and Allen McCluggage this week. Prop Pearce Jamison has returned to training this week. Centre Stuart McIIwaine starts in place of Mitchell McComb with Taylor Pollock making his debut for the 1st xv after impressing on the seconds.
Malone seconds were deserving winners over Grosvenor in the McCrea Cup last Sat with Robert Ford wishing them all the best in the final against Cooke. This weekend they play a UUC side who play a great brand of rugby with their skill level not reflected in their league position. He and his players are a expecting a tough game on Saturday.
In the first meeting between these two teams on the 16.9.17 at Gibson Park Grosvenor ran out convincing 62 – 0 winners.

KUKRI ULSTER RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP:
DIV 1: ROUND 18
Ballyclare (2) v Enniskillen (9)
CIYMS (3) v Coleraine (7)
Carrickfergus (4) v Portadown (8)
Dromore (5) v Clogher Valley (10)
Instonians (1) v Cooke (6)
