This weekend we have a full programme of games in the Ulster Bank All Ireland league with eight ties down for decision in round two of the Millar McCall Wylie Junior Cup. We have one Ulster derby in the UBL involving Belfast Harlequins against Rainey OB at Deramore Park.

In the Junior Cup we have two fascinating ties involving current Cup holders Ballynahinch seconds against Instonians at Ballymacarn Park and Ballyclare against unbeaten Armagh seconds at the Cloughan. Two games that are sure to attract large crowds. Ballyclare and Instonians are the top two teams in Divison 1 of the Kukri Ulster Rugby Championship with Ballynahinch and Armagh seconds the top two teams in Division 1 of the Kukri Champ/Conference Div 1. There is also another tasty encounter at Gibson Park involving Malone seconds and Grosvenor. Both teams met at Gibson Park last Saturday in the Conference league with Malone winning 22 – 18.

There at two Division One meetings involving Clogher Valley against Coleraine at the Cran and Enniskillen against Carrick at Mullaghmeen. High scoring Cooke entertain a strong Banbridge seconds team at Shaws bridge. Will we see an upset at Chambers Park involving home side Portadown against a much improved Ards team. Finally, we have a Division two contest between Limavady and Ballymoney at the Tom Hunter Playing Fields.

ULSTER BANK ALL IRELAND LEAGUE: ROUND 3.

DIV 1A
Buccaneers v Young Munster
Cork Constitution v UCD
Dublin Uni v Lansdowne
Garryowen v Clontarf
St Mary’s College v Terenure College

DIV 1B
Banbridge v Naas
Dolphin v Ballynahinch
Old Wesley v Shannon
UCC v Old Belvedere
UL Bohemians v Ballymena

Banbridge v Naas

Early pacesetters Naas are the visitors to Rifle Park this week. They will again provide a stern test for Head coach Daniel Soper and his players. After their opening day win at UL Bohemians the County Down side had to dig deep to hold on for a 31 – 31 draw at home last week.

Naas have started very well and Banbridge have always found them a difficult team to play against. Injuries are playing a part but that is part of the game. Banbridge are without Nick Timoney and Rob Lyttle who are involved with Ulster. Both Tom O’Toole and Greg Jones are out injured. Adam Ervine out for another 8/10 weeks, John Porter 2/4 weeks, James Hume December, Kallan Martin waiting on knee scan. Robert Sinton returns this week.

Ballynahinch v Dolphin

Rugby Consultant Brian McLaughlin has inspired a different mindset at Ballynahinch this season. New playing structures have incentivised all the coaches, players, members and supporters as the team aspire to return to Div 1A of the UBL. Such are the playing resources available to the Ist xv coaches the focus is on assembling a combined playing squad from the 1st and 2nd xv who can step up and play on the 1st xv. There is so much depth this season there are now several players playing on the clubs 3rd xv who have UBL and Ulster Premiership experience.

The 1st xv win against Old Wesley was welcomed after the opening day defeat at Old Belvedere. Ulster players Peter Browne, Jonny ‘Mo’ Simpson, Jack Regan, Aaron Cairns, Jonny McPhillips, David Busby, Zac McCall, Aaron Hall and Rory Butler have added quality to their playing squad this season.

Ulster players released for the game in Cork this week include David Busby, Aaron Cairns, Jonny McPhillips, Zac McCall, Jack Regan, and Aaron Hall with injury ruling out Rory Butler and Jonny ‘Mo’ Simpson.  Peter Browne will be involved with the Ulster squad this week.

There are some concerns over knocks picked up by Conor Kelly and Campbell Classon with Stuart Morrow a major doubt.

Director of Rugby Ronnie Duncan feels there is a positive environment at Ballynahinch rugby club since Brian McLaughlin arrived with the players having responded positively to his presence. With 34 new playing registrations at the club competition for starting places has extended from the 1st xv, 2nd xv, 3rd to the 4th xv. Players who played Ulster Senior and All Ireland league rugby are now playing for the 3rd xv. Coaching additions include Tom Rock and Glen Kyle coming in to assist with the 1st xv. Kenny Morton and Davy Harris undertaking coaching duties with the 2nd xv. Former Instonians 1st xv coach Mark McDowell has now taken on coaching the 3rd/4th xv squads. For clubs and teams coming up against Ballynahinch teams this season they will face an even greater challenge to be competitive. The culture at Ballynahinch is that their teams want to win every match and every competition they play in.

The influx of new players has increased the energy levels and desire for success at the club. There was disappointment the 1st xv lost their first UBL match at Old Belvedere. For a number of the young players it was stepping up from Schools rugby to play Adult rugby. You make a mistake and you will get punished in the adult game. It has all been about cutting out the mistakes from schools rugby and cutting out the errors. The young players learned from their experience to defeat Old Wesley last Saturday at Ballymacarn Park.

Captain James Simpson is the only long term injury with news confirmed this week that he will not require surgery. It is anticpated he will return after Xmas. The only other doubts in the 1st xv squad are Ulster players Rory Butler and Jonny ‘Mo’ Simpson otherwise the coaches have a full strength squad at their disposal. The strength and conditioning work put in by Glen Kyle in the off season for players on the 1st/2nd and 3rd xv has paid off.

Interesting looking at the front row options at Ballynahinch. Last season this was an area of concern. Available are Stuart Orr, Zac Cinnamond, Kelvin Hamilton, Andy Weir (Out for season with shoulder injury), Ben Cullen, Campbell Classons, Jonny Blair, and Callum Reid from RBAI.

Former Wesley College player Campbell Classons originates from County Donegal. He has impressed the coaching team with his early season form. Kelvin Hamilton has returned from NZ to add depth. In the hooking department. Joe Roe has moved on to Clontarf. The club have Zac McCall, Andrew Harper, Clayton Milligan, Conor Piper and Graham McKitterick with the latter two able to cover the back row.

Nowhere is competition more competitive than in the back row. 18 year old Zac Ward (Son of Andy Ward), has stepped out of schools rugby straight into UBL rugby this season. Aaron Hall has added a physical presence by his inclusion in the forwards with former Quins Captain Ollie Loughead another player who is stepping up to Div 1 rugby. The second row in the absence of James Simpson has been looking to John Donnan, Pete Browne and Jack Regan with Regan able to play in the back row.

Campbell Classons along with Aaron Hall and Zac Ward are players to watch out for this season on the 1st xv.

Ballymena v UL Bohemians

There was a sense of frustration amongst the Ballymena coaching staff that their team was unable to break down a well organised Dolphin defence during a dominant second half to lose narrowly against the Cork side last week. Head coach Andy Graham did not hide his feelings. The team played badly with a huge error count in the first half. The team and the players have no one else to blame but themselves. They were good enough to win but through their own ineptitude and mistakes contributed to a missed opportunity to win the match. It is all about putting the performance behind the team as they go in search of a win in Limerick. In this block of four games you want to win 3/4 matches to put yourself in contention for promotion.

After the win at Donnybrook over Old Wesley the concern was that the players would not be mentally right for the visit of Dolphin. This week it is all about getting the players psychologically and mentally prepared for UL Bohemians. There was a slowness and lethargy in the changing room before the Dolphin match. As Andy Graham put it; the players weren’t trying to go to the depths needed to win a rugby match. That mindset has to change this week.

The UL Bohemians match is a winnable game. The attitude has to be right this week with the team pulling together.

Selection is not straightforward this week due to injuries and players unavailable to travel. There are doubts over the availability of Brett Herron as he picked up an injury in training with Ulster. Adam McBurney is involved with Ulster this weekend. Number 8 Adrian Hamilton is ruled out with a knee injury that will require further exploration. Mark Foster had to leave the pitch after 30 seconds with a head injury against Dolphin. He will now follow return to play protocols.

The Ballymena selection will include Nacho Clandera Crespo with Andy and Chris Cundell in the front row. David Whann and Connor Smyth in second row. Stephen Mulholland should start at number 8 with other back row options between Willie McKay, Matty Agnew, James Gallagher and Ben O’Ryan. Michael Stronge starts at scrum half with either Brett Herron or Glenn Baillie at out half. Alan Smyth and Callum Patterson will pair up in centre with Jonny Rossborough and Jonny McMullan on the wings with Rodger McBurney at fullback.  Other late changes could involve Matthew Norris, Angus Kernohan, Dean Reynolds and Daryll Montgomery coming into the backs.

Ryan Matheison and Bryan Young are expected to provide front row cover with Joe Thompson not available.
David O’Hara was not available last week. Azur Allison is following return to play protocols with both Marcus Rea and Ross Kane coming into consideration for selection next week.

DIV 2A

Cashel RFC v Malone
City of Armagh v Galway Corinthians
Galwegians v Blackrock College RFC
Highfield v Queens University
Nenagh Ormond v Greystones

Malone v Cashel

Two wins from two against Munster teams in the opening weeks. Can this Malone team make it three when they travel to Tipperary again to play Cashel. Head coach Paddy Armstrong is expecting another tough and physical contest. It is always very difficult to go down there. It is one of the most competitive leagues in years so every game is tough.

The coach is awaiting late fitness tests on Ryan Clarke and Peter Cooper. James McAllister and Phil Lucas remain on the injured list but are progressing well.

Ulster releases include Jack Owens, Peter Cooper, Matthew Dalton and Joe Dunleavy.

The Malone players are looking forward to the challenge this weekend.

City of Armagh v Galway Corinthians

Big weekend coming up for Armagh rugby club. Two big challenges with the 1st xv facing a Galway Corinthians team coming off the back of a win at Greystones, supplemented by Connacht Academy players and the seconds facing a trip to one of the top two Junior sides in Ulster rugby in the Junior Cup that makes for an exciting weekend.

Assistant coach Chris Parker feels there are unlikely to be many changes to the 1st xv. Phil Matthews is unavailable with no decision taken on who is going to replace him whilst Timmy McNeice remains out injured.

Queens University v Highfield

The students put in a first half full of errors, handling mistakes and poor tackling to fall 37 – 7 behind visitors Nenagh Ormond at the Dub last Saturday. They rallied in the second half to close the game to 37 – 31. Two players who made a big impression off the bench in the second half were forwards Alexander Clarke and Daniel Dass. Captain Nigel Simpson played his part scoring two tries to add to the one he scored in the win at Galway Corinthians.

Both Alexander Clarke and Jonny Stewart have been released by Ulster with Mark Keane, Angus Curtis and Josh Jordan remaining on injured list.

Jack Milligan is also out. The coaches are expected to rotate the squad this week with Jordan Southway coming into the forwards. Several decisions have to made on the backline formation with selection to be confirmed on Thursday night.

DIV 2B

Belfast Harlequins v Rainey OB
City of Derry v Skerries
Dungannon v Old Crescent
MU Barnhall v Navan RFC
Wanderers v Sunday’s Well

Belfast Harlequins v Rainey OB

Two defeats have left Quins firmly routed at the bottom of Division 2B with no league points. There was much to ponder over from their two games Against Navan and City of Derry. Against Navan the team had clawed its way back into the game to level the scores at 17 – 17 only for a poor final quarter to allow Navan to kick three penalties and win 26 – 17. Against Derry Quins were leading 12 – 10 at halftime only to lose the second half 22 – 5 to leave the final score 32 – 17 in favour of the North west team. The potential is there in the squad with the team maybe lacking a couple of experienced players in key positions. Centre Mark Gribben should return this week after serving a one week suspension.

Quins Head coach Nicky Wells can’t get over the number of injuries in club rugby plus you have to deal with all the variables impacting on players availability due to work and family commitments. At school he can control the preparation of players strength and conditioning programmes to reduce injuries. In the UBL players have to undergo Strength and Conditioning training otherwise they will not be able to compete with the demands of a collision based sport. As he put it; if you are going to play a collision sport such as rugby union, players have to understand the reason they pick up injuries is because you either commit to strength and conditioning training or you can’t play rugby in the Ulster Bank league.

For the match with Rainey the coach makes a number of changes. Captain Danny Annett is ruled out and is replaced by Ken McKenzie in the second row. Neil Montgomery returns at hooker with Steven Weir covering off the bench. Mark Gribben returns after suspension to take his place in the centre with James McConnell dropping down to the bench. Other bench replacements with be decided at training on Thursday night.

Rainey Head coach John Andrew’s is delighted with the strength in depth he has available this season with two of his Ulster under 19 players Michael O’Neill and Jack McIntosh returning to the 1st xv squad this week. Gavin Martin and Bernie Mullan are just returning from injury and will play for the seconds this week with scrum half Michael Wilson on holidays.

Injuries rule out Tommy O’Hagan and Michael McCusker this week with Jody McMurray and Nicholas Stirling coming in to an otherwise unchanged squad. It is great to have that depth and quality in the squad.

The quality added to the squad includes South African hooker Brad Roberts, Paul Pritchard, Jason Blomfield, Andrew McGrath, Josh McIIroy, Nicholas Stirling, Robert Lamberton, Simon Crooks and Adam Kirk.

Two former Rainey players Matthew McClelland and Timmy Emmerson are expected to be included in the Belfast Harlequins squad that face Rainey OB.

City of Derry v Skerries

One week you lose 71 – 7 at the Aviva stadium against Wanderers. You then ask the question how do the players pick themselves up The answer was quite emphatic. The City of Derry players responded from trailing visitors Belfast Harlequins 12 – 10 at halftime to winning their match 32 – 17 scoring five tries in the process. New Zealand coach Trevor Will certainly worked his magic to reverse their opening day defeat against Wanderers.

Dungannon v Old Crescent

Visitors Old Crescent completed the double over Dungannon last season and have opened their campaign with two wins. There was relief at Stevenson Park last weekend that Dungannon were able to pick up their first win at Sunday’s Well in Cork after losing narrowly to Skerries at home.
Head coach Andrew Hughes was pleased with the win. It was a tough outing in very tough weather conditions in Cork. There was disappointment that the the players were not able to have the experience they would liked to have had on such a great playing surface at Irish Independent Park.
Defences dominated the game with the result going either way. The coach was pleased to get the first win, especially leading into the Old Crescent match who are carrying on their form from last season.

Mervyn Brown and Connor McGeough are added to the injury list along with long term absentees James McMahon and Ross McCaughey.
Stephen Todd, Mark Riddell and Lewis McCrabbe are all unavailable this week. John Joe Kane will make his first start this season.

DIV 2C

Bruff v Sligo
Malahide RFC v Tullamore
Midleton v Bangor
Omagh v Bective Rangers
Thomond v Seapoint

Bangor v Midleton

The North Down side felt they were denied a deserved win at Seapoint last Saturday. Former Bangor Grammar out half Lewis Brett scored a wonderful individual try with new full back Nathan Burns adding a long range penalty to give his team a 8 – 7 lead into the second half. A late Seapoint score denied the seasiders a win. Sometimes it is not only the elements you have to learn to deal with when you travel away from home. Another learning curve for this young Bangor playing squad.

Bangor 1st xv Manager Ricky Armstrong explained the changes to the Bangor team from the opening day win over Tullamore. With out half Gareth Millar still travelling between University in England and home the coaches wanted to give exciting former Bangor Grammar out half Lewis Bret more game time in the UBL. Brett started the game at Seapoint with Millar on the bench. He did not disappoint scoring a fine individual try in the first half to give his team the lead. This week he is selected at scrum half for match in Cork as the team look to exploit his searing pace.

Second row Martin Withers who took his place on the bench is another former Bangor Grammar player who stands at 6’ 7”. He is raw at present and with the right coaching can develop into a much needed second row for the club. Thomas Boyd another Bangor Grammar player heads off to Uni in England.

Injuries and unavailability determined the starting xv up until kick off at Seapoint. Jamie Clegg travelled with the squad but pulled out with a sore Achilles. The decision was taken to not risk him. Mike Weir and Phil Broderick were unavailable to travel with both Chris Jordan and James Stewart carrying injuries.

Many factors went against the Bangor team at Seapoint with the team almost pulling off a win. The new players did really well and have bought into the 1st xv ethos and spirit.

The team was delighted to welcome returning backs Mark Widdowson and Nathan Burns with Burn’s place kicking a welcome addition.

Selection has been difficult. Team for Midleton 1. Philip Whyte (Captain), 2. Andrew Shaw, 3. James Leary, 4. Lewis Stevenson, 5. Dave Caughey, 6.James Henley, 7. Jamie Clegg, 8. David Bradford, 9. Lewis Brett, 10. Ross McCloskey, 11. David Charles, 12. Desi Fusco, 13. Phil Broderick, 14. Rob Gamble, 15. Nathan Graham, 16. Andrew Jackson, 17. Charlie Clegg, 18. Martin Withers, 19. James Stewart, 20 Adam McCusker.
Mark Widdowson picked up a knock against Seapoint and is rested this week.

Omagh v Bective Rangers

Like Banbridge, Omagh allowed Midleton into their game at the weekend to grab a 29 – 29 draw. Another learning curve for Head coach Phil Marshall and his players in their first season back in the UBL after 17 years. Still one win and one draw from their opening games with an opportunity to make it two wins when they play Bective rangers at the Tom Mellon playing fields.

Omagh full back Lee Warnock joins the list of unavailable players due to injury which includes Johnny Sproule, Yonga Taleni, Stephen Maclaine, Oscar Nelson, James Rutledge, Simon McCarroll, Richard Harper and Lee Murphy.

Ally Beckett, Richard Hemphill and Mark Brown are all unavailable due to work commitments.

With three full backs now unavailable Head coach Phil Marshall will give a debut to Eoin Murnaghan who has come through the clubs Youth section to play on the thirds and seconds. He has impressed in training and deserves his starting place. Stuart Allen comes in to take his place on the bench.
It was hard for the coaches and players to take in losing two points in the last play of the game against Midleton, but these are the lessons the team must learn and quickly if they are to be competitive in this league.

MILLAR McCALL WYLIE JUNIOR CUP 2ND ROUND

Clogher Valley v Coleraine
Ballynahinch seconds v Instonians
Ballyclare v Armagh seconds
Limavady v Ballymoney
Portadown v Ards
Enniskillen v Carrickfergus
Cooke v Banbridge seconds
Malone seconds v Grosvenor

Clogher Valley v Coleraine

Three weeks ago these two teams met in a league match at Rugby Avenue in Coleraine. Despite being understrength Clogher twice led during the match before going down 26 – 12 to the home side. Last Saturday Coleraine lost 21 – 16 at home to Div 1 pacesetters Ballyclare. Clogher Valley had the pleasure of hosting a very strong Ballynahinch seconds team who ran out comfortable 85 – 0 winners. Clogher rested several players in preparation for their Cup match with Coleraine.

Clogher Forwards coach Davy Black was not happy with the performance of his players against Ballynahinch seconds. The coach rested several players but did not expect such a below par performance from the players who took the pitch to re present Clogher Valley 1st xv. The coach is expecting a reaction this weekend against Coleraine.

Changes from last week will see Ryan and BJ Wilson restored to the back row along side Alex McKeown with Neil Henderson returning at prop. In the backs winger Clive Donaldson is unavailable with David Speers and Allister Trenier paired together in the centre. Fleming Agnew moves from the wing to full back.
The news on back row David Sharkey is encouraging. He does not require surgery and has started a rehab programme.

Training on Tuesday night was positive with the players determined to win this Cup tie with Coleraine on Sat.

Coleraine Head coach Richard Boyd: His team have had a tough start to the season playing Instonians, Clogher Valley and Ballyclare in the league. To take 7 points from these 3 games for a newly promoted side is really encouraging and shows we are not far away. Instonians and Ballyclare have shown in recent weeks what they are capable off and why they are going to battle it out for the league title. He felt his team could have beaten both sides if they had been more clinical on each occasion, but they will learn from both experiences with the team having to perform for 80 mins.
There is a step up in intensity and physicality this year, but it is great challenge for everyone involved and a test of our strength and depth. We have a senior squad that is young, full of enthusiasm and works really hard at training.

The return of Cameron Fulton and the additions of Andrew McKee, James Milsopp, Peter Wisener, Matthew Leighton, Rohan Mulligan, Thomas Lavery, Richard McGregor, Mark Woods and Josh McCaw have really freshened up the squad and more than filled the loss of players to Ballymoney.

This week Coleraine face another tough test away to Clogher Valley. He felt his team were somewhat lucky to get a bonus point at home against a weakened Clogher squad earlier in September. His players will have to work hard to match their set piece again and be more patient and clinical in attack if they want to earn a tough win down at the Cran.

In terms of selection Paddy McGowan returns to the starting lineup with Richard McGregor in contention for a starting place after impressing for the 2nd xv last weekend. Stuart Evans, David Greatorex and Roger Bonner are all side lined with short term injuries.

Ballynahinch seconds v Instonians

Cup holders Ballynahinch will not give up their position as Cup holders without a fight according to 2nd xv manager Ian Dornan. Ever since the draw was made the players have been eagerly looking forward to this match. Both teams are unbeaten after strong starts to their season. Evidence of this was illustrated at the weekend when Ballynahinch won 85 – 0 at Clogher Valley and Instonians won 51 – 5 at Enniskillen. Again all the ingredients are there for a match of high quality at Ballymacarn Park.

According to Ian Dornan, Brian McLaughlin has injected much needed momentum into the playing teams at the club. When you look at the quality of the players on show at Clogher Valley. They include forwards Gareth Gill, Conor Piper, Ben Cullen, Graham McKitterick, Andy Simpson and Captain Keith Dickson along with Brian Howard, Stuart Orr, Kenny Morton and prop Kelvin Hamilton who has returned from NZ. In the backs they have James McBriar, Davy Harris, Aaron Ferris, Joe Bingham, Ryan Wilson, Paddy Wright, Ross Carlisle, Will Stewart to choose from.

Winger Joe Bingham scored four tries against Clogher Valley with full back Paddy Wright kicking everything. The attitude of Brian McLaughlin is that if a player performs well on the seconds he will give him a place on the 1st xv bench. Such is the competition for places. In fact several of the players named will find themselves playing on the 3rd xv this season.

When you see players of the quality of Will Stewart, Stuarty Evans and Matty Connolly playing on the 3rds you have to acknowledge the playing pool now available at Ballymacarn Park.

On Tuesday and Thursday nights you can have 50/60 players training with 1st and 2nds whilst the other teams train on the upper pitches. Brian Mclaughlin has ensured coaches have been put in place down through the club.

Ian Dornan is so passionate about the Hinch seconds retaining the Junior Cup and what it means to the club. If they lose they will chase the Conference league title and the Towns Cup. Ballynahinch seconds is all about winning. Only one team beat them last season and that was Ballyclare.
It still hurts the players that defeat. In the first round Ballynahinch were 15 minutes from being knocked out of the Junior Cup by Larne. It required two late tries from former Inst scrum half Rhys O’Donnell to steer the team into the second round.

Ian Dornan and his players will show respect to visitors Instonians on Saturday, but it is all about winning this cup tie and progressing to the quarter finals. He wants his players to fight hard to get the win. Both Kenny Morton and Davy Harris combine their playing with helping Ian Dornan to coach the seconds. The manager feels the team have started to show their form after defeating Coleraine two weeks ago. When they went to Clogher it was with a mind set that Clogher almost defeated them in the Cup last season. The attitude was right from the first whistle with the players being physical and scoring every time they got the ball. Only the referee blew the game up 20 mins early Hinch would have scored over 100 points. Ian Dornan feels this team is just getting into their stride.

Instonians Director of Rugby William Leacock and his players are looking forward to this Cup tie. The coach welcomes back Captain Josh Atkinson in the back row. Centre Davy Scott is ruled out with an injury. He is expecting a tough game against a good Ballynahinch team. He looks at it as a good test for his young team at this stage of the season.

Ballyclare v Armagh seconds

Head coach Mike McKeever was delighted with teams win against a very strong Coleraine team on Sat. They have a very fast and talented back line.
The coach is pleased with how his Ballyclare squad are progressing and it is a credit to their commitment shown in training and the effort in matches so far this season.

For the match with Armagh seconds Mike McKeever will continue his policy of rotation to reward the players efforts in training to create depth and also plan for later in the year when the squad are without players for various reasons.

Armagh assistant coach Chris Parker anticipates few changes to the second xv following their convincing 56 – 14 win at CIYMS last Saturday in the Conference league. Captain Stephen Morton will face a late fitness test on Thursday night, but is expected to lead the team on Saturday. Stuart Hooks has recovered from injury and could be an option in the back row with the rest of the squad having a clean bill of health.

Armagh seconds have been able to strengthen their playing resources this season with new faces including Chris Cousens (Portadown), Misi Bogitini (Instonians), Josh Kennedy (Dungannon) and Pau Gimeno with several members of their winning Nutty Krust winning team including Barry Finn and Paul Mullan involved.

Limavady v Ballymoney

Head coach Mark Nicholl was disappointed in losing their league game 22 – 11 at Academy last week. Having played well in the first half the team picked up four serious injuries and played the second half with 13 players allowing Academy to score two late tries. He was delighted by the commitment shown by the players throughout the game and he felt his players deserved a lot more from the match.

Ballymoney will be a huge ask for his team this week having watched them. They are a very well balanced side who work very hard for each other, with experienced players in key positions.

The coach has a lot of injuries to contend with. Jack McCool, Richard McCollum, Michael Rice, Allan Robinson all out long term. He is hoping to have Peter Wilson available in the next few weeks.

His team will go out on Saturday with the attitude to enjoy this week and look to build on the performance last week.

Ballymoney Head coach Jonny Hanna will make a number of changes this week. Hooker Kenny McAneaney is ruled out with a hamstring injury. Both prop Andy Brown and replacement hooker Philip Beattie are unavailable.  The coach is hoping Captain and number 8 John McFetridge will return along with centre Martin Irwin and full back James Cleland. Peter Irvine was an unused replacement against Omagh and will start in front row. Winger Nigel Nevin remains on injured list with centre Chris Hughes unavailable. Ulster Junior wing Chris Watson will undergo a fitness test on Thursday night.

In the back five of the scrum the coach has a number of options with a number of players playing well. They include the experienced Allan, Mulholland, Pollock, McKeeman and Ramage along with young Andrew Stevenson and last years player of the year James Blakely all competing for second row and back row places.

Competition in the backs is strong with a decision to be made to start Pollock and Strang who played at Omagh or Steele and Young who have been the starting half backs. In the absence of Nathaniel Steele  centre replacement Thomas Hunter has put in some excellent performances scoring four tries against Omagh seconds. Seconds backs Bell, Armstrong and Aaron Brown have put their hand up for selection on the 1st xv.
Several other players have returned to training including Lewis Wray, Jordan Munnis, Neil Johnston and Lewis Murphy to add competition in the backs.

Jonny Hanna is expecting a tough game at Limavady. It is always a hard place to travel to. They are a physical team who can score tries through their talented backline.

Priority for Ballymoney this season is securing their future in Division two. It is all about taking it one game at a time. Survival is their aim. When the team get enough points then they can reset their goals.

Portadown v Ards

Interesting game at Chambers Park on Saturday. Portadown remain without a win this season whereas opponents Ards have stabilised after being relegated last season to Division 2. Under the guidance of coaches John West and Scott Young the team were unlucky to lose their league match at Larne last Saturday 16 – 15. The coaches have a full squad to select from with Gareth McBurney and Ryan Thompson available this week.

For Portadown Head coach Richard Hedley it is challenging times for both the coaches and players. The squad has been disrupted by injuries and lack of consistency in selection. The coach is hopeful he will get back players over the next few weeks. The squad is working hard in training and trying to build up confidence for matches. Both Andrew Chambers and Niall Davison are unavailable this week. Ryan Muldrew, Michael Orr, Nick Holtand mark Muldrew come into the squad this week.

Enniskillen v Carrickfergus

Carrick were convincing 33 – 3 winners when these two teams met in the league two weeks ago. It was a powerful display from the home pack that was the difference. Carrick followed this win up with a narrow 13 – 10 win at Dromore last Saturday. Enniskillen suffered a 51 – 5 defeat at home to Instonians. It has been a difficult few weeks for Head coach Willie Gibson as he struggles with injuries and unavailable players.

Key personnel missing for Enniskillen include Robert Balacoune, Adam Lendrum, Jamie Johnston, David Buchanan, Gareth Beatty, Gareth Donaldson, Jack Harte and Ashley Finlay with a few more unavailable.

On a brighter note the coach welcomes back the experienced Gareth McCoy. This should help the pack by adding experience that his forwards are badly missing.

On the Instonians defeat the coach felt his players showed improvement from the league defeat at Carrick. 12 unforced errors in the first 20 minutes killed his team. His scrum held up and competed in the lineout with the team making six clean breaks compared to one the week before. Small improvements are starting to show through.

Carrick are a very strong team with the Enniskillen team looking to improve further from the Instonians game. The coach is looking a strong start on Saturday from his side.

Cooke v Banbridge seconds

Head coach Colin Atkinson was delighted to see his team pick up the bonus point in their 41 – 12 win over Portadown on Saturday. Winger Andy Pollock certainly showed his finishing ability by scoring four tries. He is just another link in the chain of our team.

The coach has a number of players carrying knocks with question marks over their fitness. Selection will be finalised on Thursday night.

Banbridge Head coach Daniel Soper: The seconds are putting together a good side and are settling on the core of the team. Conor Field who hasn’t played since February starts this week. There is a nice blend of experience of Paul Ross, Colin Bickerstaff and James McCrum up front with the youthfulness of Ross Cartmill, Josh Agnew and Jamie Ewing in the backs.

Malone seconds v Grosvenor

Two teams who met at Gibson Park in the Conference league last Saturday. Malone held on to win 22 – 18 with full back Andy Bryan’s scoring two tries, Conor Kelly one with Mark O’Connor converting two and kicking one penalty. Grosvenor try scorers were Jack Kennedy and David Egner with Adam Skelton converting one and kicking two penalties.

Malone manager David Heron has assembled a strong Malone team for the return match this week in the Junior Cup.

For Grosvenor coaches Robert Ford and Michael Smyth their goal is securing promotion to Div 1 of the Kukri Ulster Rugby Championship this season.

Last Saturday was an opportunity to rest several players and give game time to a number of players from the second xv. These included former Grosvenor schools players Jack Kennedy, Ben Davidson, James Cartilage and Ryan Ashfield. Injuries continue to increase with Paddy Hamill, Pearce Jamison, Mitch McComb, Mark Johnston, and Stuart McIIwaine joining the list with out half Peter Davison ruled out with a virus. Players including James Cartilage and Ben Davison are unavailable this week.

Head coach Robert Ford will welcome Peter Dawson and Andrew Kelly into the forwards with Allen McCluggage reinstated at scrum half.
The coach is expecting a changed Malone side with a number of good players returning. It will be hopefully be a good game with his team having to play a lot better if they are to win. Pleasing for Grosvenor is that they are able to field three teams this weekend despite having over 20 players unavailable.
