Club Volunteer Profile: Finn Valley's Gerrard Doherty

Gerrard Doherty gives a huge amount of his time to rugby. A school teacher at St. Columba's College in Stranorlar, Co Donegal, he coaches all the school boys and girls teams, as well as volunteering at Finn Valley RFC. He was one of the founding members of the club in 2009, where he is currently holds the position of President. Gerrard also serves many other roles as a volunteer, including Girls Youth coach. Gerrard Doherty gives a huge amount of his time to rugby. A school teacher at St. Columba's College in Stranorlar, Co Donegal, he coaches all the school boys and girls teams, as well as volunteering at Finn Valley RFC.

He was one of the founding members of the club in 2009, where he is currently holds the position of President. Gerrard also serves many other roles as a volunteer, including Girls Youth coach. For the past calendar year, Gerrard has bi-weekly driven six local girls to Ulster U18 Development Squad training sessions at various locations around the Province. During 2013 he also decided to become more health conscious and has lost a huge 11 stone!

We asked Gerrard a few questions to find out more about this 'Unsung Hero'.

Who or what got you involved in rugby?
Aidan O'Shea, my French teacher in St. Columba's College introduced me to the game in 1987

Current roles held within Finn Valley RFC?
Female Coach, Youth Convenor, Club President, Match Secretary, Taxi driver

Why did you get involved with female rugby?
When Finn Valley was founded it was always the intention of the club to involve female participation. This was achieved through mixed tag rugby evenings until enough girls came together to form adult and youth female teams. There is also an easier transition for girls from school to the club environment because these girls were playing contact rugby in schools.

Best rugby moment? 
The trip to the 1991 World Cup quarter-final in Dublin, watching Ireland's Gordon Hamilton's famous try against Australia and getting back down to see a David Campese inspired Australia defeat New Zealand the following week.

Worst thing about rugby?
As a coach, and a father, it is seeing young players get injured

Hobbies or pastimes?
Opera singing, Treasurer of Opera Society

Favourite Drink?
Donegal soft drink called 'McDaid's Football Special'

Lasagne - but now in small portions
