Clubs kick-off the 'Walk to the Rugby World Cup'

Clubs across the province are asking members to walk together, record their steps and 'Walk to the Rugby World Cup'.

Ulster Rugby has set the clubs of the Province a challenge - ‘Walk to the Rugby World Cup’! It’s a collective target of 12 million steps to walk the 5,880 miles from Kingspan Stadium, Belfast to the Nissan Stadium, Yokohama, Japan.

The challenge is all about the health, fitness and social interaction of our club members. Walking is simple, free, and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. Walking briskly for up to 30 minutes a day can help you build stamina, burn excess calories and make your heart healthier. Walking as part of a group is a great way to stay motivated and socialise with friends or meet new ones. So instead of standing at the side of the rugby pitch freezing, club members are being encouraged to go for a walk around the side-lines.

So far, 12 clubs have set off on their journey already.

Some members of Ophir RFC had a rather muddy walk around the pitch during Saturday’s match, even recruiting some of their younger members. Ballynahinch RFC arranged a group for an evening walk and they are encouraging members to walk for at least ten minutes a day, reporting back to a Facebook page for extra motivation. Banbridge RFC members have been walking during matches and keeping babies asleep at the same time. Rainey OB RFC minis haven’t let a cold, wet evening ruin their plans and have started with a brisk walk to hopefully say goodbye to winter!

Ulster Rugby mascot Sparky, school groups attending the Nevin Spence Centre, Include Youth and even the staff at the Ulster Branch offices have also been getting involved.

We have a long way to go so any extra assistance in reaching our target is gratefully welcomed!
