Cooney determined to make his mark at Kingspan Stadium

John Cooney will arrive at Ulster in a few weeks time with an even bigger spring in his step after making his Ireland debut against Japan last weekend.

Cooney replaced Kieran Marmion during the 35-18 win in Tokyo and the scrumhalf is now determined to win more international caps.

Describing his debut, the 27-year-old said, “It was a huge honour - I am absolutely delighted. It was nice to get on and it was something I was working hard on over the last few weeks.

“My aim now is to get stuck in and hit the ground running with Ulster and try and get back for the November Tests with Ireland.”

Cooney will arrive in Belfast with a winners medals in both the European Cup and the Guinness PRO12 - something most Ulster players yearn for.

Having had spells at Leinster and Connacht, the Dublin native hopes he can add something to Les Kiss’ squad in the years ahead.

“It was a no-brainer to make the move to Ulster for next season,” admitted Cooney.

“It was something I felt I could do and I’m looking forward to signing for Ulster. I’ve got to know the Ulster boys who were on tour in Ireland and I played with Paddy Jackson (against Japan), so I’ve enjoyed that.

It’s a new experience and a massive opportunity,” he added.
