Craigavon Senior High School have rounded off a fantastic season for the school by being awarded with the Ulster Carpets youth club of the month under the category of best High School of the season.
As Master in Charge of Rugby, Damien Campbell, commented, there was one standout moment for the school this year:
“The highlight of the season was probably winning the Pollock Cup. The school had previously shared the cup once, so this was the first time we have won the competition outright. That was a big thing for the school and also obviously for all the players, as it’s nice to be remembered as the first school team to win a particular competition.”
As well as winning the Pollock Cup, Craigavon Senior High School also reached the final of the High Schools Cup at Kingspan Stadium where they were edged out by Dromore High School.
According to Campbell, the success of the team was down to several factors:
“We got a good core of players back from last year’s side who reached the Trophy semi-final so we had nine players back in the starting team with that valuable experience. The success of Lurgan Junior High in U14 competition over the past few years has also helped as we have seven players from there now playing for us. Likewise in Killicomaine, Clounagh and Tandragee, the teachers are working really well with the players too, so the kids are more exposed to rugby and are developing a better understanding of the game before they move on to here.”
As part of their prize, Craigavon Senior High also won a bag of Ulster Carpets branded rugby balls plus 30 tickets to see Ulster take on the Barbarians at Kingspan Stadium.
