Danske Bank Schools’ Cup Semi Final Preview: Methodist College

Ahead of the penultimate stage of the cup, we’re taking a closer look at each of the 4 teams in contention this season.

RBAI v Methodist College, Tue 1st March, 2:30, Kingspan Stadium

Methodist College are the most successful side to have ever competed in the Danske Bank Schools' Cup, with a record 36 victories.

They've also appeared in the showpiece final more times than any other school, taking part 63 times.

Methody's convincing 45-17 win over Campbell College in 2019 was the last time a team successfully came through a final and raised the Cup at Kingspan Stadium.

Prior to that, they were beaten in 2017 by RBAI, but Methody won 5 of the 7 finals between 2008 and 2014, including 3 consecutive titles from 2012-2014.

This season, their Danske Bank Schools Cup campaign began in Round 4, with a 31-0 victory away to Enniskillen Royal Grammar School.

The Methody team scored five tries through Callum White, Josh McAdam, Josh Stevens, Joe Dickson and Ben McFarlane. Ben was also successful with three of his conversion kicks.

This sent them on the road again for the quarter-finals, this time traveling to Ballyclare High School.

Methody had to work hard before coming away with a 21-6 victory.

Ballyclare High School took a 3-0 lead before Methody scored a try through Lorcan Hanratty, which was converted by Ben McFarlane, to take a 7-3 lead into the break.

Early in the second half a successful McFarlane penalty increased the Methody lead to 10-3.

Two further penalties, and a last minute unconverted try from Chris Bradley, secured the win to book their place in the semi-finals against rivals RBAI.

Methody Director of Rugby Nick Wells said: "I would consider this to be a strong Methodist College 1st XV. We have had a reasonably good season, suffering only two defeats against Campbell College and Blackrock College Dublin."

"We feel we are a very balanced side with several game-changing players. Patrick Fullarton Healy (Second Row), Josh Stevens (Openside) and Ben McFarlane (Fullback) have all represented Ulster Schools U18s."

"Michael Crothers (Number 8), Peter O’Hagan (Centre) and Lorcan Hanratty (Centre) have all represented Ulster U19s."

"Two tough away fixtures have set us up well for a semi-final at Kingspan and we’re looking forward to the challenge from RBAI. They will be well organised and committed to progressing to a final."
