I am a school bus driver from Donaghadee that played a bit of rugby years ago.
How did you get involved in volunteering in sport?
As I work with special needs children, I jumped at the chance to help with the Sharkies.
What is your volunteering role within the club?
I am the coach.
What does your role entail?
I take training sessions.
What attracted you to the role?
I enjoyed working with the children and young adults.
How long have you been volunteering in this role?
About 5 years now with the Sharkies
Did you have any rugby experience before you started volunteering?
Yes, I have also volunteered in youth rugby.
Do you think it’s essential to have rugby experience to volunteer in your role or can anyone do it?
Certainly not as it's all about giving the players a bit of fun at training and honestly the rugby comes second.
Have you gained any new skills through volunteering?
A better understanding of the skills and other abilities needed to coach and facilitate the various issues that arise.
Has volunteering improved your confidence, if so, how?
I am definitely more confident in dealing with issues and coaching.
Has volunteering in sport impacted positively on your life?
It definitely brings a sense that you are doing something positive, having a small effect on other people.
Have you had any volunteering highlights?
It's usually always the end of season water fight were the players gang up on the coaches.
What would you tell other people who would like to get involved in rugby but who don’t play or have no experience in rugby?
Just do it and you will not regret it.
