Disability Volunteer Profile | Chris Phun

Chris is a coach at the Portadown Panthers, and talks about how rewarding volunteering as a coach can be.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am an absolute foodie, and enjoy CrossFit in my spare time. I am a Chartered Accountant and my favourite holiday destination is Norway.

How did you get involved in volunteering in sport?

I got involved through my family.

What is your volunteering role within the club?

I am a coach at the Panthers.

What does your role entail?

I assist the head coach, ensure plays are having a goof time in a safe environment, assist players and encourage players to participate.

What attracted you to the role?

Fellow coaches & players

How long have you been volunteering in sports and has it always been in this role?

Not sure, I started off helping during a tour then helped every Saturday morning.

Did you have any rugby experience before you started volunteering?

Yes, I played in school. From ages 12 to 18 and then in university.

Do you think it’s essential to have rugby experience to volunteer in your role or can anyone do it?

No, anyone can volunteer.

Have you gained any new skills through volunteering?

Yes, communication, being able to find new ways to communicate with different players. Every player is different and reacts to different outcomes.

Has volunteering improved your confidence?

Yes, one step at a time. At first, you’ll probably be able to assist one player. As you go on, you find that you’ll be able to manage a small group of them.

Has volunteering in sport led to any other opportunities either in sport or outside of sport?

Yes, in my experience, employers like to see this, and they have asked if I wanted to join their tag rugby team or join in their internal competitions.

Has volunteering in sport impacted positively on your life?

Yes, I am much more confident. It’s a nice feeling to have, knowing that a sport I once enjoyed, others of all levels can enjoy too.

Have you had any volunteering Highlights if yes, what was it?

During a tour, we had a karaoke night for both players and coaches. I won, singing “Livin’ On a Prayer”.

What would you tell other people who would like to get involved in Rugby but who don’t play or have no experience in rugby?

Don’t worry about it and just join for the craic. If you like it, come back next week. If it’s not for you, no problem! At least you tried it.
