Tell us a bit about yourself.

I have been involved in coaching at Banbridge RFC for over 20 years and more recently since 2019 have been involved with our Mixed Ability Rugby Team Banbridge Barbarians in which we promote inclusive Rugby for all.

How did you get involved in volunteering in sport?

I got involved through watching my son play in minis and was asked to get involved.

What is your volunteering role within the club?

I am the Team Manager of U18s and Mixed Ability Rugby team.

What does your role entail?

I arrange fixtures for our Mixed Ability team on match days and ensure kit etc is there. I post team lists and co-ordinate feeding arrangements on match days. On training nights, I assist with and run sessions. I attend all relevant courses to ensure I am up to date with current teaching techniques.

What attracted you to the role?

I just love the craic and the friendships I have made through coaching. They are friends for life. I love our mixed ability family and it’s an extension to my family.

How long have you been volunteering in sports and has it always been in this role?

I have been involved for over 20 years in coaching but have been Junior Chairman/ Treasurer/ Child Welfare Officer and Mini Convenor.

Do you think it’s essential to have rugby experience to volunteer in your role or can anyone do it?

No, I don’t because if you have any sort of sporting background you can hone your skills through attending Ulster Rugby Coaching courses.

Why did you decide to volunteer in your club?

I love all sports and it is great to get out to meet so many different people.

Have you gained any new skills through volunteering?

Yes, I have learned numerous new skills, coaching, safeguarding and first aid and have attended Disability Inclusion training.

Has volunteering in sport led to any other opportunities either in sport or outside of sport?

Yes, I have been acknowledged through our local ABC sports and I sit on our local sports forum.

Has volunteering in sport impacted positively on your life?

Yes, it has been a huge part of my life and has kept me active. I enjoy empowering what knowledge I have gained over the years to others. It’s great to see what you teach being repeated on the pitch.

Have you had any volunteering highlights?

I have had many but one that sticks out is Robbie Crory scoring a try at IMART World Cup from his wheelchair being pushed over by the rest of the team. That and last year's U18s doing the treble.

What would you tell other people who would like to get involved in Rugby but who don’t play or have no experience in rugby?

Get involved you won’t regret it.
