Lorcan Dow, the talented young Ulster A back-row forward, was in understandably ebullient mood after his side beat Munster A in a 38-31 thriller in Naas on Thursday afternoon.
Dow contributed two tries in a fine all-round team performance by Ulster A, sponsored by CD Group, and he was particularly delighted that the side captained by Darren Cave, and including Tommy Bowe, was a successful blend of younger and more experienced talent in the Ulster system.
“I thought we all pulled together really well, it was a very diverse bunch of lads and it all came together and we got the performance for what was a good win.
“This week we said we were going to have a ‘go’ at them, and that win was a tribute to just that and what we set out to do, to be on the front foot and attack,” said Dow who, like his back-row colleagues Stephen Mulholland and Clive Ross, has sampled life in the senior Ulster jersey and aspires to become an integral part of that squad.
“The experienced guys – like Darren, Tommy, Andrew Warwick and the others - they’re constantly talking, they give you confidence, their experience filters through, and if we ask any questions they’re more than happy to answer.
“To have the young guys play so well, and have a team which had that injection of experience, was a great experience,” said Dow immediately after the game.
Dow was typically modest about his own important two-try contribution: “I suppose they were really team tries, back-of-the-maul stuff, it’s great to cross the whitewash obviously, but somebody had to do it!” he quipped.
Alex Codling’s team had prepared carefully for the game, and Ulster Director of Rugby Les Kiss and his coaches took an intense interest in the performances of some of the developing younger players and in the fitness and form of some established performers who could all play vital roles in the Guinness PRO12 ‘run-in’.
“Like everybody we were thrilled to see Tommy Bowe back in action, back in the white jersey,” said Dow.
“It was great, I’ve grown up watching him and it’s fantastic to line out alongside someone like him,” said the breakaway, whose all-round display was one of several in an Ulster jersey to catch the eye.
“Tommy’s such a great lad and it was so enjoyable being in the same team as someone who’s achieved what he has, and hopefully the senior side will be able to call on him very soon.”
