Funding boost helps improve Rugby Facilities for Malone

The popular Alpha Programme has unveiled its winter funding package with over £200k for six projects and Malone Rugby Club plans to enhance its facilities further in east Belfast.

Alpha Resource Management - a waste management and green energy company – within the Lagan Group launched the initiative in 2008. It distributes funding through the Landfill Tax Credits Scheme to a range of community and biodiversity projects within a 15-mile radius of the landfill site at Mullaghglass on the outskirts of Lisburn.

Malone Rugby Club has been successful through Alpha’s Small Grants scheme, which allocates between £3-10k to local projects. They will invest £10,000 and improve changing facilities in order to support the club’s growing membership and develop the area of women’s rugby further. The proposed works will also complement a wider plan to improve social facilities within the clubhouse and increase community use of the outdoor gym and function hall.

Local MLA Claire Hanna commented on the latest funding package:

“I was very happy to help celebrate the latest Alpha Programme funding package awarded to Malone Rugby Club. The Club have used the funding to transform their facilities and rejuvenate East Belfast’s rugby scene. The programme continues to support Staff, Players and ultimately fans of Malone Rugby Club and I hope to see its success continue in the future.”

Niamh-Anne McNally from The Alpha Programme said:

“Over the last ten years we have invested more than £4.8m on 141 projects. This funding continues to play an important role and is designed to have a lasting impact upon local communities. A wide range of rugby clubs, GAA clubs, football clubs, community gardens, play areas and other environmental regeneration projects have benefitted through the initiative. We are delighted to support Malone Rugby Club as they continue to provide top class facilities for their teams and the wider community.”

The Alpha Programme, administered by Groundwork NI, makes awards to successful groups four times per year following an application process.

Richard Rogers from Groundwork added:

“This is the third Alpha Programme award for Malone Rugby Club, and that is testament to the sterling work they have done to engage other sporting organisations and the wider community, as well as the success of their ongoing efforts to promote women’s rugby”.

Applications for the next round of Alpha Programme funding close on 12th January 2018.
