This event forms part of the wider DSD funded ‘Sport in the Community’ partnership project between the three codes which supports a range of joint development programmes, such as shared learning workshops, club development programmes, community outreach initiatives, neighbourhood renewal and volunteer development.
This joint good relations event showcased some of the existing work that clubs and community groups are doing to promote good relations in their area. Craig Gilroy (Ulster Rugby), Daniel Lafferty (Irish FA) and Colm McCullagh (GAA) all attended the event and spoke openly and frankly about their multi-sport experiences, giving their support to the Game of Three Halves.
Ophir Rugby Club, John Mitchels GAC Claudy and Eglington Eagles FC shared their first-hand experiences of how working together has helped in the day-to-day running of their clubs.
Speaking at the event Trevor Ringland from Sport 4 Change said: “This is a great resource that will help clubs build relationships across the community including other sporting codes, schools, churches and community groups. This event provided a platform for clubs and community groups to share the work they are doing to build a new and positive legacy for Northern Ireland.”
Ulster and Ireland rugby star Craig Gilroy commented: “I’ve played all three sports at some point in my life and I think a lot of the skills required for each sport are easily transferable. It’s great that the Game of Three Halves is really taking off and is helping to encourage good community relations.”
