Bangor RFC hosted a Girls Youth Rugby Blitz on Sunday, with five clubs involved.

The home team was joined by Malone and Belfast Harlequins, in addition to the newly formed clubs at Ballynahinch and Ballymoney. The teams played a number of small sided games before coming together at the end for a combined 15-a-side match.

Female rugby in Ulster, particularly at youth level, has seen a dramatic increase in participation since Ireland Women won the 6 Nations Grand Slam for the first time in history in March this year.

Since then, Ulster Rugby has employed two dedicated Female Rugby Officers, Zoe Templeton and Glenda Mellon, to help grow the female games at all levels. This has resulted in the establishment in seven new female sections in the past six months, with another seven in the pipeline.

This has been made possible due to the generous support of the NI Executive and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure through the 'Promoting Equality, Tackling Poverty and Social Exclusion through Sport' programme.
