Glasgow outscored Ulster by 7 tries to 3 to power to dominant 50-20 PRO14 semi-final win at Scotstoun on Friday night.
The result brought an end to the club careers of Rory Best and Darren Cave, with the latter bowing out as Ulster’s joint most-capped player of all-time along with Andrew Trimble (229). Rory Best will now dust himself down and focus on preparations for the Rugby World Cup later this year.
In truth, Ulster were second best from the very start. Indeed, former Ulster player Tommy Seymour opened the scoring in the second minute following a blistering start by the hosts, and Dan McFarland’s side never recovered. Adam Hastings converted, before also adding the extras for an Ali Price score soon after for a 14-0 lead.
Hastings and Cooney swapped penalties around the half hour mark, but a Rob Harley try just before the break pushed the game beyond Ulster, as Hastings converted to give his side a 24-3 half-time lead.
Half-time: Glasgow 24 Ulster 3
Ulster needed to score first after the break, but Seymour and Kyle Steyn crossed to put Glasgow 36-3 ahead.
The visitors rallied in the last quarter, with Marcell Coetzee, Rob Herring and Michael Lowry getting over the whitewash. However, those scores were offset by tries from brothers George and Peter Horne.
It was a disappointing end to the season for Ulster, but the young squad can reflect on a positive season and be buoyed by the progress made in such a short space of time.
