Harlequins Reaction | Iain Henderson

Ulster's skipper reflects on exiting the Investec Champions Cup after finishing 5th in the pool stage and how the EPCR Challenge Cup offers a new opportunity for the province.

On the performance...

"Things didn’t go the way we planned, a lot of it was down to us, our mistakes and not taking the opportunities that came. A lot of our errors allowed Harlequins to take their opportunities.

It’s so frustrating that things like our territory and possession were the right things, but the bounce of a ball, a few other things don’t go our way and you find yourself 14 points down at half-time.

We’ve been here before and we didn’t get the reaction we wanted, a lot of our basics weren't right, we didn’t get our collisions right and our ball retention just wasn’t good enough.”

On errors in the match...

"Some of it was individual, some of it was guys backing up others' errors and trying to play ways we shouldn’t have been playing. We needed to be playing smarter and making sure our ball retention is better, not trying to force things and looking at how we manage a game.

Those things are probably bigger picture, but there will a lot more onus on our in individual mistakes, be that our ball-carrying, knock ons and the breakdown. We knew Will Evans and a few of their other guys would be good there."

On entering the EPCR Challenge Cup...

"I have been at Ulster for 12 seasons and have no silverware, so this is an opportunity to win something. Irrespective of whether it’s in the second tier competition or not, silverware is always the goal.

We know we can pull it together and beat big teams, so it’s about us trying to find some form over the next few games to put us in a good position to do that."
