Herron settling well into life at Ulster

Brett Herron is one of a number of new faces to arrive at Kingspan Stadium this summer and the 20-year-old fly-half has already settled well into life at Ulster.

Along with Charles Piutau, Rodney Ah You, Kieran Treadwell and Angus Lloyd, Brett is preparing for his first season at Ulster and the new guys have been made to feel at home very quickly:

“All the new guys are getting on very well. Everyone has been so welcoming so it has made it very easy and the transition has been quite seamless. As a new guy coming in you really appreciate it when all the players and staff make it so easy for you to settle in.”

Having signed for Bath in 2014 as an exciting prospect from the prestigious rugby school Wellington College, Brett is a former England U18 international who looked nailed on to be the starting fly-half for England U20’s at that year’s World Championship, before injury cruelly ended his chances.

A clearly ambitious character, Brett is now looking forward to a new challenge at Ulster, citing further opportunities among the deciding factors that brought him here:

“I think it was the opportunity that I’d get here, which might’ve taken a little longer if I had stayed at Bath. I want to play the highest level of rugby that I can, and I think that I can achieve that with the players and coaches here and the way that Ulster want to play.”

With one week of pre-season training under his belt, Brett’s early impression of life at Ulster has been very positive:

“It’s a great club with a fantastic setup here at Kingspan Stadium. It’s quite different to what I would’ve been used to but that’s refreshing. There are some very impressive players here, some very skilful players. Obviously there are some new faces and the quality of the likes of Charles (Piutau) is a given, but I’ve also been very impressed by some of the older heads and the mentality they bring to training, which is phenomenal. As a younger player coming in, it is something that you look out for and hopefully thrive off.

As an Irish qualified player himself, Brett is looking forward to working with the returning international duo of Paddy Jackson and Jonny McPhillips, who have been in scintillating form for Ireland senior and U20 squads respectively during the summer:

“I’m really looking forward to working with a player like Paddy who has proven himself at international level, to pick his brain and seeing how he can help me develop as a player. Jonny has also had a great World Championship campaign for Ireland U20’s so hopefully there will be some healthy competition and we can keep pushing ourselves to improve all aspects of our game.”
