International Women’s Day | Stephanie Gleadhill

We caught up with our Lead Performance Nutritionist, Stephanie Gleadhill to find out what inspires her and how she got to where she is in her career.

Can you tell us how you came to be Lead Performance Nutritionist?

I studied an undergraduate degree in Sport and Exercise Sciences, later completing my Masters in Sport and Exercise Nutrition, both with Ulster University. I was originally interested in studying physiotherapy after my undergraduate degree, however when I graduated, Ulster University had launched their Masters in Sports Nutrition and my love for food and nutrition changed my path. I worked as a Sports Nutritionist for the Dairy Council for Northern Ireland prior to getting the job as Academy Performance Nutritionist here in April 2016. In September 2019 I got the opportunity to work alongside the Senior Men before getting the role of Lead Performance Nutritionist in June 2021.

What do you find most rewarding about your job and what are the challenges that come with it?

There’s loads of things that are rewarding about the role. Seeing players achieve their individual goals – progressing through the pathway to getting their first Senior/International cap; collaborating with other departments to imbed processes in the squad that support performance; and obviously achieving on the pitch – but that high is more short lived.

I think my biggest challenge is regenerating my energy. Working in high performance sport, like any job, requires a lot of energy specifically in how you turn up each day and the energy you bring into the environment. It can be challenging to bring productive, positive energy during congested game/training schedules, when there is disappointment or  sustained external pressures and balancing a busy family life. It is a skill I am constantly working on and something I’ve learnt I need to be deliberate in practicing.

What would be your greatest achievement?

Professionally, my greatest achievement is working alongside the Ireland Senior Men’s squad for a Summer Series. In my personal life, it is watching my kids grow.

Can you describe yourself in three words?

Hard-worker, adaptable, caring

Name a woman that inspires you – this can be professionally or personally.

I couldn’t name just one! I am so fortunate to be surrounded by so many strong, successful, caring women who constantly inspire me professionally and personally. From my daughter to Carmen Colomer, Performance Scientist of the Gold Coast Titans, and everyone in between. Women are amazing.
