Irish Wheelchair Rugby is to send a team to the Wheelchair Rugby World Championships for the first time ever in Sydney this summer. Part of that team is Will Doggart from Belfast, who plays for the Ulster Barbarians.
Irish Wheelchair Rugby travelled to Nottwil, Switzerland in April to the World Championship Qualifiers where they faced New Zealand, Brazil, Korea, Poland and New Zealand. They won the tournament undefeated, granting the team progression to their first ever World Championships tournament.
Ireland shares Pool A with Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Sweden and Denmark.
This does not, however, promise a step towards the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo. Paralympic qualification will come in European competition success, with the IWRF (International Wheelchair Rugby Federation) 2018 European Division B Championships taking place in October.
Irish Wheelchair Rugby requires significant funding to support its participation in competitions such as this as. Will Doggart has established a GoFundMe page to raise funds for the trip and donations would be gratefully received.
