USRFR hosted our latest mid season New Referees Course on Saturday 2nd December 2017 at Newforge Country Club.
It's a free, daylong course with all key aspects of the game covered. The next one will take place in Belfast in late August/early September, prior to the start of the 2018-19 season.
On completion of the course you'd become a trial member of the Ulster Society of Rugby Football Referees (USRFR). This is a provisional membership while you learn the ropes. To begin with you'll be involved in touch judging and refereeing underage matches. USRFR will be keen to help you progress and you'll receive ongoing workshops and mentoring. Progression would be based on your aptitude, commitment and fitness levels.
Key requirements to become a referee:
- Fitness: referees must maintain a good level of fitness.
- Commitment: ability to commit to a minimum number of games per season for the USRFR.
- Previous rugby experience: beginner referees who have previous game experience tend to move through the trial process faster than those without. So having some previous experience as a player, coach or referee can be advantageous.
- Knowledge of the Laws: Laws of the Game can be found on the World Rugby website: http://laws.worldrugby.org/index.php?&language=EN
