Mid Ulster Sports Arena, Cookstown played host to an IRFU Stage 2 Coach Education course at the weekend. Normally run over two full days, this pilot course started at 5pm on Friday evening and was completed by 5pm on Saturday. Coaches from clubs and schools across the province congregated to train in how to introduce players to 15-a-side rugby. The course deals with the technical and tactical elements of rugby as well as ‘practical’ coaching and generic coaching requirements.
Stage 2 coaches are important to the continued growth of rugby in schools and clubs as they help introduce new players and former mini rugby players (male & female) to full 15-a-side games requiring a range of skills and offering a variety of positional options. Safety and fun are key elements for coaches working with these inexperienced players and the coach needs to be able to teach and develop contact skills around the tackle, scrum, lineout, ruck and maul.
