Local artist Kathryn Callaghan honours son’s rugby career with heartfelt artwork donation

Celebrated local artist, Kathryn Callaghan, has donated three original pieces of her artwork, titled ‘In the Thick of It’, to Ulster Rugby, Ards RFC, and Regent House Grammar School. The donation was made to commemorate her son, Matthew’s, impress...

The official presentation took place two weeks ago at Regent House Grammar School. Attendees included Ulster Rugby President, Paul Hart, Dr Iain Moles from Ards RFC, Regent House Principal, Mr Carville, Regent House Director of Rugby, Mr Gamble, Rugby Coach, Brian McLaughlin and Kathryn Callaghan herself.

The dynamic and emotional artwork was inspired by Matthew’s impressive journey through the Ulster Rugby Pathway, which saw him represent Ulster at U18 Club level in the summer of 2023, U18 Schools in the summer of 2024, where he was part of the Interprovincial winners squad, and ultimately Ulster U19s in the summer of 2025. Furthermore, Matthew was a valued member of the IRFU National Talent Squad from September 2024 to September 2025, during which time he also played for Ireland U18 against Italy U18 in October 2024.

Describing the inspiration behind the piece, Kathryn shared, “‘In the Thick of It’ was inspired by the raw energy, movement, and sense of unity that pulses through every rugby match. I wanted to capture that moment when everything converges, the power, the drive, the camaraderie, and express it in a way that feels alive and true to the sport. Rugby has always been close to our family, so this piece is very personal to me.”

She went on to explain that the idea to donate the artwork was a natural extension of her family's appreciation for the three organisations. “Ulster represents the highest level of local passion for the game and we are so proud of Matthew for representing them through their U19 squad, Ards RFC is our home club and community, and it was at Regent House that Matthew found his love of rugby, and they have supported him through his journey on and off the pitch. It felt right to give something back in celebration of the connections and opportunities they’ve given him and us as a family,” Kathryn stated.

Recalling Matthew's time with the province, she added, “Matthew’s time representing Ulster U19s was a huge source of pride. He embraced every minute, the training, the friendships, and the challenge of competing at that level. It was an unforgettable experience for him, and as a parent it was a joy to watch him grow through it. His journey absolutely fed into the emotion behind this artwork.”

Ulster Rugby, in receiving the donation, extends their sincere thanks to Kathryn for such a beautiful and meaningful gift to the club.
