Mixed ability/integrated rugby teams include players who have a learning disability. The team is a mix of disabled and non-disabled player’s and the laws of the game are adapted to reduce the risk of injury.
Since 2007 tag rugby for those with learning disabilities has grown in popularity. There are currently eight rugby clubs across Ulster who have a special needs section. However at present there are no structures in place for people with learning disabilities to play the full contact version of the sport.
With a view to researching mixed ability/integrated rugby, the IRFU (Ulster Branch) with the support of Malone RFC, will host an exhibition game of mixed ability/integrated rugby involving teams from Scotland (Trust Rugby International) and Wales (Swansea Gladiators).
This will be the first time that mixed ability rugby has been played in Ireland and presents a wonderful opportunity to promote the sport and stimulate discussion around the possible development of the sport in Ireland.
