Match Report | Ulster 14-41 Munster

Ulster kick off their interprovincial campaign with a spirited defeat against the reigning champions in Armagh.

Ulster's Senior Women kicked off their new campaign under a new coaching set-up and with renewed belief.

The Armagh R.F.C was a picturesque venue for the encounter, with a strong showing from Ulster fans, who packed out the sidelines and clubhouse.

Ulster went into the game hoping to land a blow on their interpro rivals after they were beaten 34-0 last time out.

Munster started the game off strong, with an early try from the player of the match, Stephanie Carroll, to get the reigning champions on the scoreboard. The missed conversion meant the visitors were 5 points to the good in the opening minutes.

Roared on by the Ulster faithful, Murray Houston's side got stuck into Munster's defence and after a period of sustained pressure made a smart score. After the ball was played wide, full back Maeve Liston delivered a clever, accurate cross field kick that Ella Durkan gleefully touched down for a well deserved try.

Durkan kicked home her try to send Ulster into an early lead against the visitors.

Munster fought back though, showing the reasons why they won the campaign last season.

Two tries through Stephanie Carroll and Clodagh O'Halloran, with one conversion sent Munster into a halftime lead.

The visitors came out after the break and continued their attack, Róisín Ormond getting the bonus point try after a quick tap attack.

Ulster's spirit didn't dampen and the home side fought their way back into contention with Maebh Clenaghan powering herself over for a try. Ella Durkan scored her second conversion of the match to make the score 14-24.

Munster however responded with an impressive try of their own, as huge run from Nic a Bháird in their own 22, resulted in Ellen Boylan scoring a try.

A frustrating moment for the home side as their attack had quickly turned into a Munster try.

Stephanie Carroll then completed her hat trick of tries, as she scored in Ulster's corner.

Brianna Heylmann marked her debut for Munster with a try following a maul close to the end of the match to stretch the visitors lead.

Ulster, while disappointed, had plenty of reason to be positive with clear progress shown in the performance, as they matched Munster's physicality for large periods of the match and showed grit in the game.

It was clear to see that the squad has a new level of belief as they fought hard and showed some of the work that has been going on under the new coaching team.

Ulster's next match is against away against Leinster on 19th August.
