Tell us a bit about yourself.
I was born in Wales in a town called Barry on leaving full time education I became a civil servant which had me moving around the British Isles I ended up in Northern Ireland where I met my wife and decided to settle down in Armagh. During my time in the civil service I became a registered referee as injury stopped me playing the game and joined the Ulster Branch referees society after becoming a member of City of Armagh RFC.
How did you get involved in volunteering in sport?
I joined City of Armagh RFC in 1979 as a qualified referee, but due to injury I had to give it up, and still wanted to be involved with the club.
What is your volunteering role within the club?
Youth Registration officer, Youth injury reporting officer.
What does your role entail?
Ensure all youth players at U14, U16, & U18 also all coaches at this level are registered.
How long have you been volunteering?
I have been a volunteer for nearly 50 years first as a referee then youth coach to youth convenor for the club and representing it on the Branch youth committee I then became President of the club remained on the committee for a number of years but due to work commitments had to give it up for a few years but then I volunteered to become honorary secretary which I held for 6 years also secretary of the club development committee once that was completed I resumed my role with youth rugby which is now my present job.
Why do you volunteer?
I have enjoyed the game of rugby all my life from schooldays and I always wanted to get involved one way or another.
What makes your club a great place to volunteer?
City of Armagh is one of the oldest clubs in Ireland and has a good reputation as a friendly club and good to be part of.
Has volunteering improved your life?
Yes it has given me confidence and kept mentally fit.
What would you tell other people who would like to get involved in volunteering but don’t have any rugby experience?
There is plenty of work to be carried without any knowledge of rugby within and sport and volunteers are necessary for amateur clubs.
