It was back on Saturday the 26th March, the well-established Cooke Warriors very kindly invited Ballymoney RFC Ladies Touch Rugby team to Shaw’s Bridge.
Ballymoney are new to the scene as their touch team was only set up in May 2021 by Katie Speers with the overall goal of attracting more female players to rugby with a modified game.
Instead of just playing a match between both teams, Paul Brown (Head Coach, Cooke Warriors) hosted a skills session with both teams, followed by a training game with blended teams.
The development sessions were enjoyed by all and there was a lot learnt by everyone which could be taken back to their clubs. The event was concluded by both teams going head to head in a competitive game followed by a presentation in the Cooke RFC clubhouse where a plaque was presented to Ballymoney.
Katie commented: “Our ladies had a brilliant afternoon and learnt so much about the official game of touch rugby from this lovely team of people”.
Although the event concluded with a competitive game of Touch Rugby, the main aim was to develop new skills and meet new people and hopefully attract more people to Touch Rugby.
In the video below, Katie explains the importance and the reason why touch rugby was introduced to the ladies of Ballymoney RFC, and how recreational touch rugby can be an opportunity for any club.
