The nominees for the annual Heineken Ulster Rugby Awards have today been announced, ahead of the winners being revealed across the club’s social channels on Monday 7 June from 12 noon.
Given the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the restrictions on rugby activity outside of the professional game, the awards this year will centre on the achievements of Ulster’s Senior Men’s team over the 2020/21 season.
Award winners will be revealed online, rather than at the usual gala gathering, on Monday 7 June on the club’s official Facebook and Twitter channels, beginning at 12 noon with the URSC Player of the Year. Each subsequent category winner will be announced every two hours through until the Heineken Ulster Rugby Personality of the Year at 8pm.
Michael Lowry is in contention for an award in three categories – URSC Player of the Year, Rugby Writers’ Player of the Year and Openreach Young Player of the Year. John Cooney is also shortlisted in both the URSC Player of the Year and Bank of Ireland Player of the Year categories.
Ulster Rugby CEO, Jonny Petrie, commented, “This is the second year in which COVID-19 has meant that we must host our Heineken Ulster Rugby Awards virtually. Although it’s disappointing that we cannot come together to celebrate in-person, I’m delighted that we are still able to recognise some of Ulster’s stand-out players from this season.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our players who made their Ireland XVs debuts over the course of the last year – Eric O’Sullivan, Neve Jones, Billy Burns and Brittany Hogan. These players, along with our coaching staff, have dedicated a significant amount of time and effort to put themselves in the position of being selected to play at the highest level during a difficult year. Congratulations to all, and best of luck to the nominees.”
