On Friday 4th and Saturday 5th August, Ophir Rugby Club will host their Seven-a Side Rugby competition, at Magowan Park, The Cottonmount, Mallusk.
Celebrating its 43rd year, the event is the traditional start of the local Rugby season. Following the success of previous 2-day events, the weekend will kick off on the Friday evening at 6.30pm with an Under 18s competition for the Ken Bonar Memorial Trophy. Invitations have been sent to Academy, Ballyclare, Carrick, Larne, Lisburn and Rainey and most have confirmed entry.
On Saturday morning there will be an Under16s tournament starting at 9.30, This will feature, amongst others, Ballyclare, Carrick, Cooke, Coleraine and Virginia.
The senior competition for the Will Totten Memorial Trophy starts at 1.00. Teams include UUC, Ards, Ballynahinch, Holywood and Ballymena. Ophir will compete in all three competitions.
Presentations will be made by the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey at the conclusion of the tournament around 5.30pm. The President of the Ulster Rugby Branch and one or two of the current Ulster squad will also attend during the afternoon.
As well as the prospect of a great weekend of rugby, there will also be children's entertainment, face painting and the usual refreshment marquee, to make this a tremendous fun filled occasion for the entire family.
