Ophir RFC host rugby taster event to launch new women and girls’ section

Earlier this week, Ophir RFC hosted a taster session for women and girls to give rugby a try at the club’s new base, Ulster University Jordanstown campus, as part of their launch of a new women and girls’ section. Ulster Rugby’s Women and Girls’ Rugby Development Officer, Neal Johnston and Rugby Participation Officer, Becky Hall were in attendance to support the new coaching team in leading the session. The women and girls participating worked on a number of skills, including passing and evasion drills, before moving on to some light contact work, learning good tackle techniques and falling safely. Commenting on the event, Ophir honorary secretary and women’s coach, Richard Dunseath said, “It’s long been an ambition of the club to create women and girls’ rugby teams. We had a steady stream of female rugby players come through our mini section; however they had no pathway at youth and adult level and had to go to other clubs. Our partnership with Ulster University at Jordanstown has allowed us to fulfil our ambition. “Ophir RFC now offers world-class facilities and a dedicated coaching structure for women and girls to get involved in rugby. Adult women train Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7-8.30pm, and youth girls train on Wednesdays from 7-8.30pm and all levels of experience and abilities are welcome. Come and be a part of something new, help build a team capable of competing against the best in Ulster, train in a positive environment with access to excellent facilities, led by experienced coaches. You will have the opportunity to take part in training sessions designed to make you stronger, fitter and a better rugby player. “The women I spoke to after the session said they absolutely loved it and are looking forward to the next one!” Neal Johnston from Ulster Rugby added, “This is a fantastic opportunity for women and girls in Newtownabbey, Jordanstown and the surrounding area.  This brand-new team is a perfect chance to meet new friends, get involved in something that will improve your physical and mental well-being and, most importantly, it’s great fun! “I think the future is looking bright for Ophir with new first class facilities and a progressive Committee with a shared desire to grow the club.  I would say to anyone who is unsure, give it a try; everyone has to start somewhere. With this new team, everyone is starting their journey together.  You never know, you might just love it as much as the rest of us do!” Anyone who might be interested in joining the new women and girls’ section at Ophir RFC, please contact Richard on 07968 743 667.
