Over 100 Attend Wheelchair Rugby 'come And Try' Event

The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, in partnership with Ulster Rugby, Ulster Barbarians wheelchair rugby club and Disability Sports NI, held a wheelchair rugby ‘Come and Try’ event at Antrim Forum on Saturday 25th April.

The event was well supported, attracting 100+ people who were keen to find out more about the sport. The day opened with a presentation by Nikki Gregg, Occupational Therapist in the South Eastern H & SC Trust, followed by a presentation by Irish National Wheelchair rugby coach, Stuart McLindon. The final speaker was Will Doggart who is a player with the Ulster Barbarians and a current Irish International wheelchair rugby player. Will, gave a personal account of how he became involved in wheelchair rugby and the positive impact it has had on his life.

Following lunch, it was the time for rugby enthusiasts to participate in some wheelchair rugby skills training with the Ulster Barbarians, in a session delivered by Stuart McLindon and Bernard Rooney.

Perhaps the highlight of the day was the match, where players played alongside new friends and the Ulster Barbarians. Many shouts, crashes and much laughter were heard around the arena.

It was wonderful to have the support from many individuals from the South Eastern H & SC Trust; Chief Executive, Hugh McCaughey, Chairman, Colm McKenna, Director of Nursing, Nicki Patterson and Occupational Therapy Team Lead Rachel Gibbs.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Thomas Hogg, was also in attendance along with familiar faces from the sporting world, including Ulster and Ireland rugby star, Luke Marshall.

The day was very successful and the feedback has been very positive. As a result of the event the Ulster Barbarians have recruited seven new players so far and have set up a junior section within the club. Their first match has already been arranged for 20th June in Dublin, when they will play a team from Munster in the first round of the Irish Club Championships.

This event highlights the importance of social inclusion for those with a disability and also the positive health message that was evident throughout the day.

Thanks to Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council for their financial support for the event.
