Peace IV's funded project, 'Sport Uniting Communities' is a cross-community initiative which brings together groups from different social, community and ethnic backgrounds through sport.
The project, delivered in partnership by the Irish Football Association (IFA), Ulster GAA and Ulster Rugby, provides a range of activities based on education, training, empowerment and leadership and works to change perceptions and build sustained relationships.
Schools Twinning Tour
The Schools Twinning Tour is one of the key events delivered by the Sport Uniting Communities Project. It offers schools from different sides of the community the chance to come together to experience a fully-guided tour of Kingspan Stadium, participate in an educational workshop and a visit the Nevin Spence Centre.
Drumglass High School, St Patrick’s High School and the Integrated College Dungannon were able to enjoyed the Schools Twinning Tour on Saturday 14 April; Markethill College and St. Patrick’s High School, Keady, participated in the event on Wednesday 18 April while Shimna Integrated College in Newcastle joined St. Malachy’s High School, Castlewellan, on Thursday 19 April to take part in the programme.
All participants benefited from the opportunity to engage in interactive learning experiences on the day and reaped the rewards of their hard work as the season progressed. The schools have also been working closely with the Club and Community Rugby Officers in their local Rugby Football Clubs to accommodate coaching within the schools which has enabled many pupils, who have never had the opportunity to play rugby before, to give it a go.
Game of Three Halves
A Game of Three Halves is the second key event to be delivered by the IFA, Ulster GAA and Ulster Rugby under the Peace IV funded project, ‘Sport Uniting Communities’.
This event offers participants from all communities the opportunity to join together to avail of coaching in Rugby, Football and Gaelic in the morning and play matches in the sports in the afternoon. Events such as this allow people from different backgrounds to come together and gain new experiences through sport.
The Game of Three Halves was delivered at Chambers Park, home of Portadown Rugby Club, on Saturday 28th April and enjoyed by female youth players from Portadown RFC, Portadown Ladies and Tir na Nog GAC. The event was then rolled out to transition year pupils from Monaghan Collegiate and St. McCartan’s College, Monaghan, at Monaghan RFC on Friday 4 May.
These events provide a fantastic opportunity for young people to unite through sport and their success underlines the positive partnership between the IFA, Ulster GAA and Ulster Rugby.
