Preview | Benetton (H)

A look ahead to Ulster's next fixture, as the play-off race continues against Benetton this weekend at Kingspan Stadium in Round 15 of the BKT United Rugby Championship.

The province will aim to follow up last weekend's thrilling 19-17 home victory against Cardiff, with another win this week against high-flying Benetton.

Despite John Cooney's last minute penalty securing the win over the Welsh side, other results in the URC meant that Ulster slipped to 10th position in the table, with only three points separating Ulster and Benetton in fifth place.

Marco Bortolami's team go into the fixture on the back of good form, having won their past four matches in all competitions, with a semi-final of the EPCR Challenge Cup against Gloucester Rugby to look forward to.

The Italians have had a strong season and boast a number of key Italy internationals in their side.

Last Time Out

Benetton's last visit to Belfast ended in defeat, after Ulster battled to a bonus point victory at home. The match was significant for Rob Herring, who made his 200th appearance for the province. Ulster legend, Craig Gilroy, got the hosts started following a classic Billy Burns cross-field kick.

Nathan Doak and Rob Herring got themselves on the scoresheet before half-time, giving Ulster a comfortable 21-3 cushion into the break.

The away side hit back in the second half through Ratuva Tavuyara, punishing Ulster who had been reduced to 14 men after James Hume was yellow-carded.

The bonus point was secured after Nathan Doak found a gap in the Treviso side's defence for his second try of the encounter.

Players to watch

Michele Lamaro - Benetton leader and captain of the Italian national team, Lamaro is a quality back rower, who at the age of 25, has a vast amount of experience under his belt. Born in Rome, Lamaro rose quickly through the ranks of the Italian national set-up to make his Test debut in February 2020 against France in Paris.

Less than a year later, he was named captain of the national team at the age of just 23, having previously been handed the Benetton Rugby co-captaincy in 2021.

Lamaro has held on to both roles ever since and in 2022 led Italy to their first Six Nations victory in 36 games with a win in Cardiff.

The Italian skipper is coming off the back of an improved Italy performance in this year's Six Nations and got himself on the scoreboard last week against Dragons.

Tommaso Menoncello - The 2024 Guinness Six Nations Player of the Tournament, is a player with the world at his feet. The 21-year-old is the hottest prospect in Italy, who became the winner in the award’s history, and only the second Italian winner following Andrea Masi in 2011. Menoncello's speed, intelligence and passing are all huge strengths in the Italian's game, as he is frequently able to break tackles and offload well.

Sebastian Negri - The big flanker is one of the mainstays in the Italy national side and recently starred in the Netflix Six Nations 'Full Contact' documentary that shone a spotlight on him.

The Zimbabwe born man was praised for his openness after a concussion suffered against England in 2022. A nice guy off the pitch, Negri is a tough customer on it and is a very combative, physical presence in the back-row, with a real strength at ball-carrying.
