Ravens Suffer 10-31 Defeat To Leinster A

Ulster Ravens slumped to a disappointing 10 points to 31 defeat at Deramore against Leinster A in the sunshine.

The visitors were slicker and played the better rugby for most of the game and outscored the Ravens by four tries to one. The Ravens started with Kyle McCall at hooker and Malone winger Adam Liddell.

Allen Clarke’s men took the lead on 16 minutes with a try from centre Michael Allen.

McCall made the initial charge but was stopped, the pack drove a few times before Allen picked up and charged over with a powerful run and out half James McKinney added the conversion.

Leinster were on level terms seven minutes later when full back Darren Hudson cut through the Ulster defence before offloading to centre Tom Daly to run in from five metres with Cathal Marsh adding the conversion.

The Ravens regained the lead on 32 minutes after Leinster A had lock Gavin Thornbury yellow carded for dissent and McKinney landed the resulting penalty from in front of the posts.

The sides went into the interval at 10-10, when Marsh landed a penalty with the last kick of the first half after the Ravens were caught offside in midfield.

Leinster totally dominated the second half and scored 21 unanswered points.

They took the lead two minutes after the restart, from a scrum, flanker Josh van der Flier broke and put Coghlan-Murray clear to go over unopposed but Marsh was wide with the conversion.

Marsh extended the lead with a penalty on 45 minutes but was again wide of the target after the dominant Leinster scrum earned another opportunity.

Replacement Sam Windsor kicked a penalty for Leinster  before they added two tries in the final six minutes.

The Ravens had hooker Kyle McCall sin-binned for hands in the ruck.

Replacement prop Ed Byrne finished of a slick handling move for Leinster’s third try on 74 minutes.

Bryan Byrne crashed through the home defence creating an overlap on the left wing, Leo Auva’a and Quinn Roux moved the ball through the hands for Ed Byrne to finish in the corner but Windsor failed to convert from a tight angle.

Ravens full back Peter Nelson saved a try when he carried Tom Farrell’s grubber kick over his own try line however Leinster scored their final try from the resulting five metre scrum.

Auva’a picked up at the base and crashed through two tackles to touch down and seal the win.
