A total of 38 deaf and visually impaired pupils enjoyed what was for many of them their first experience of rugby. Niall Dempsey commented: “It's great to see the pupils getting the chance to participate in a popular sport like rugby. They have all really enjoyed the session and for many of them it would have been the first time they have taken part in the sport. It's fantastic to see Ulster Rugby being so proactive in engaging blind and partially sighted young people in their work.”
Gareth Adams, PE coordinator at the school, said: “This is the first time Ulster Rugby have been to the school and the pupils have been looking forward to the coaching session. Looking at the smiles on the faces it is clear each and every one of the pupils have enjoyed the experience. Since Ulster Rugby came it is all the pupils can talk about and they are really looking forward to the next sessions.”
Ulster Rugby, through the Department Culture Arts and Leisure’s ’Promoting Equality, Tackling Poverty and Social Exclusion through Sport Programme’, will deliver a further five coaching sessions at the school over the coming months.
