Sophie Barrett | Ready to shine as Ulster prepares for Leinster clash

As Ulster prepares for a crucial showdown with Leinster at Kingspan Stadium, we caught up with prop Sophie Barrett, one of our bright young talents.

Sophie’s rugby journey with Ulster has been nothing short of remarkable. From her early days in our Ulster Pathway Programme to making her mark in the U18 setup, and now our Senior Women’s team, Sophie has consistently demonstrated the qualities that have made her a standout player. This year, she truly shone on the international stage during the U20 Six Nations Summer Series, where she was named one of the MVPs of the tournament and earned a place on the "Team of the Series." Reflecting on this achievement, Sophie shared, "Being nominated MVP meant a lot to me, and knowing my teammates had voted for me made it that bit more special. It was such a special group of girls, and it’s one of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had."

Her hard work and commitment were also recognised closer to home when Sophie was named Ulster Rugby’s Young Women’s Player of the Year. It’s an honour that she humbly accepted. "Winning Ulster Rugby’s Young Player of the Year was an award I was not expecting. I forget how young I am at times” she laughs, “I think being around so many older players in the senior squad has pushed me to grow as a younger member of the team and perform the way I can." This recognition has only strengthened her resolve to keep progressing and to continue putting in the work that has brought her so much success already.

Sophie’s role in the starting lineup for Ulster in the Vodafone Women’s Interprovincial Championship matches against Munster and Connacht has further highlighted her importance to the team. She has embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and determination. "Starting the last two games has given me the opportunity to show what I can do, and I’m thankful I have got the chance to be a part of that starting squad," she said. “The physical and competitive nature of these matches has pushed our squad to elevate our game. The games have been very physical and competitive. As a collective, we are putting teams under pressure," Sophie added, pointing to the narrow defeat against Munster as a sign of the growing resilience and confidence of the squad.

As we turn our attention to tomorrow’s match against Leinster, Sophie and the rest of the team are fully focused on the task at hand. "With Leinster up next, I think everyone knows that they can be a dangerous side, so we have to bring the energy to the next level," she emphasised. Training has been positive, and the connection within the squad has never been stronger. "The connection we have has grown so much, and that’ll help build the confidence when we get out on the pitch."

For Sophie and the team, the key to securing a win against Leinster lies in staying sharp from the first whistle and executing the game plan with precision. "Leinster are known to beat teams, and I think we will need to go out switched on from the start. We can’t let them get a lead on. I think if everyone does their job and does what we have done at training, the result will take care of itself," Sophie said, expressing her belief in the team’s ability.

As Sophie continues to develop as a player, her ambitions remain high, and when asked about her longer term goals, she expressed, "I want to continue playing for Ulster and hopefully pick up a few Ireland caps along the way. I think a focus for me is to keep performing and working on how I can be a better rugby player, engaging with coaches and learning from them," she outlined.
